Forums - Nintendo - How much did Nintendo invent originally.

I think Rol's logic is a misconception. Just because said technology is possible or was used in other non-video game devices using them for a controller or game console feature is an invention.

Essentially Ralph Bear who is credited with inventing gaming used existing technologies. Everything he used to make the console existed prior in fact he even knew that using this specific device he changed images on a TV. He then adapted that technology and upgraded it for use as a gaming console. So technically according to Rol's definition it is not an invention? Unless I am misconstruing Rol's assertion.

I mean somebody mentioned analog controls in planes or space craft to discredit analog controls in games. I am so sorry but just because an analog control device exists in another industry it does not make game console controller analog sticks not an invention.

The dictionary.com definition clearly states Inventions are "A new device, method, or process developed from study and experimentation:" I'm sorry but analog and rumble controllers are an invention by this definition. It is a new device , method and process developed from study and experimentation. John Boyd Dunlop and Scot Robert William Thomson invented the first rubber tire , but wheels have existed for thousands of years so does that mean he isn't to be credited with the invention?

Rumble was most definitly an invention, as was almost every innovation Nintendo introduced by Nintendo including motion controls. If you patent it and it is an entirely new product that hasn't existed before it is an invention. You can say analog controls have existed a very long time, but game analog controls did not and the company that started using game analog controls is the one responsable for inventing them.

The argument that Sony began work on motion controls during the PS2 era are redundant. Fact is Nintendo has clearly stated the WiiMote began its development during the NES era. Long before Sony even entered the games industry, Nintendo has been working on technologies since NES. In fact Nintendo has stated they still have technologies in development that began during the NES era.

Can you credit Sony with inventing something if they never patented it or launched it before their competitor? Are you going to credit them with the invention soully based on their word? No Sony hasn't made as many inventions in gaming as Nintendo has. End of story!

yea the stick comment came from me. remember stick shift cars? it doesn't matter what some definition says. all inventions come from a place and likely previously invented so once again if i have to go there god invented the stick. didn't he make trees? we call the limbs that fall off those trees sticks but i didn't have to go there did i.

if the op is talking about gaming innovation in general then no Nintendo invented less then Sony if either of them invented anything other then the way there technology works. every PC control makers had a button to there big analog sticks before Nintendo came along and made it smaller.

Sony and Ninty's motion controls use a different method which makes them there own inventions, but neither of the big3 have truly innovated anything but bad PR, record breaking losses on consoles and gaming in there game devisions.

so no matter how much  anyone says either of the big 3 or past manufactures invented anything. someone did it before them using it in a different way for different things. remember the remote control that has buttons on it? srry i have a larger scope on invention then you but if you truly want to comment on invention. date back to where anything that looks like it, sounds like it, or had some variation before anyone else did it thn you'll have a better take on the situation. end of story and its not up for debate.

They invented Donkey Kong.

You know that Nintendo got sued over Donkey Kong by MGM or whatever film studio made King Kong, right?

MCA Universal... who lost the lawsuit because they had apparently previously won a lawsuit declaring King Kong as public domain (not sure why... maybe they took the idea from somewhere else)

They didn't invent Donkey Kong? How about Mario?

^^^Nintendo is (or is that Nintendo are?) a bunch of copycats!!

They took that name from someone who was connected to NoA in some way. Either an employee or someone from a pizza delivery service. I don't recall the exact details how Mario got his name, but fact is that the character in question was born as Jumpman and carpenter.

Do you ever use google/wikipedia?

It was the name of their supposed "Nintendo of America's warehouse landlord Mario Segale"

Rarely. I take pride in knowing such stuff without looking it up.

@superchunk who do you think Google goes to when they don't know?

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Dual sticks go back to the Atari 2600/arcade days -- see Robotron.
So while they might have been new to analog, this was nothing more than the application of an old concept to a new use.
Which is what innovation is all about.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
