Forums - Microsoft - MS Fiscal Year 2012 1st Qtr - 360 ships 2.3m, MS - profits $5.74bn

EDD revenue increased primarily reflecting higher Xbox 360 platform revenue and Windows Phone revenue. Xbox 360 platform revenue grew $114 million or 7%, led by higher Xbox LIVE revenue, offset in part by decreased video game revenue and lower volumes of Xbox 360 consoles sold. Video game revenue decreased due to strong sales of Halo Reach in the prior year. We shipped 2.3 million Xbox 360 consoles during the first quarter of fiscal year 2012, compared with 2.8 million Xbox 360 consoles during the first quarter of fiscal year 2011.

EDD revenue for the three months ended September 30, 2011 included a favorable foreign currency impact of $51 million.

EDD operating income decreased reflecting higher operating expenses, offset in part by revenue growth. Cost of revenue grew $173 million or 19% primarily due to higher royalty costs resulting from an increase in Xbox LIVE digital marketplace third-party content sold and sales of Gears of War 3, offset in part by decreased product costs due to fewer sales of Xbox 360 consoles. Research and development expenses increased $24 million or 8%, primarily reflecting higher headcount-related expenses.

i hope they can do something to counter PC sells. overall it looks positive enough.

Sorry for the n00b question, but why are the shipments numbers so important in VGchartz??? I mean, it´s nice to know how many 360/PS3/Wii where shipped, and the money companies are making, but you don´t know how many were already sold to the consumer and how many are in the shelves.

So the true question is, why are these numbers important for us VGchartzers when it comes to sales??? (true question yo)

Source downplayed the results predictably but it is rather odd that profit in the EDD division declined compared to last year. Live Gold only cost $50 last year. And aren't they selling Kinect at an insane margin?

They already said, higher operating expenses.

lol.. throwing around XBox freebies by truckloads to students in the States is now called "higher operating epenses"? Well, gotta pay those truck drivers, somehow..

That doesn't explain why Revenue is up.

Well, maybe, just maybe, those people bought software/Live memberships, other stuff with it?

It's just a weird idea, probably totally wrong - all those people probably never unpacked their freebies. But I am pretty sure the idea behind MS giving all those freebies to students ( and we are not talking about a few hundred boxes) was to get subsequent sales from it. Think about it for a while... sometimes logic IS your friend....

Apparantly Xbox revenue is 89% of the EDD

they are doing great, why would they release a new system any time soon....they all learn from the success from the ps2, you don't need a new system every 3 years....10 years is much better

Because VGC is not 100% accurate.  In fact, they have been way off a few times in the past.  With shipment numbers, we can compare the sell-through number VGC has with the official (and 100% accurate) shipped data.  If there is a huge gap, like say 2-3 million or more, than VGC is undertracking a system.  Of course, if VGC has the sell-through higher than the shipped numbers (which I think happened with the Wii) than they are severely overtracking its sales.  These comparisons will lead to adjustments and a more accurate VGC.

Good numbers overall.......

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

playstation 2 release: october 2k

playstation 3 release: november 2k6

xbox 360: november 2k5

next xbox: ???

you know that the xbox 360/next xbox reached the same gap than the ps2/ps3 had, right? and it will be minimum one year more. so no clue how long a console can sell but if they would do like sony did with the ps2 we would get the next xbox now!

Why do sony fans litter this thread looking for low numbers, how sad.

wow, grow up...

the only sony fan here commenting on sales predicted a number higher than one of the biggest 360 fans on this site, which was even lower than the actual numbers.

he also then posted up he predicted to low...

stop being paranoid
