Why are laugh tracks so popular? I must be one of the few to find it quite annoying.
If I get the joke, I'll laugh. If I don't, you don't need to queue me to laugh. I still won't find it funny even if I have to laugh along.
You can't watch a comedy sitcom with tons of laugh tracks queuing you to go along with it.

If the comedy is good enough, I don't notice them

They're simply there to make the show seem funnier than it is, because most sitcoms simply aren't that funny, with the rare exception of Everybody loves Raymond and the occasional Seinfeld
I dislike the flashing applause signs at the live shows even more.
If it weren't for one of those, you'd be able to hear a mouse fart most any of Jay Leno's episodes.

They're actually not that popular anymore. Very few new sitcoms have laugh tracks.
