okay - so he want's real-time Avatar like processing on a console.
What did Avatar cost again?
How expensive will games have to be to recover the dev cost?
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this happening in the future too, but I can't see that happening on consoles for a reasonable cost within at least the next decade

@Zarx: I hope you're right...

People said the same sort of thing with regards to mo-cap and Kinect but MS came pretty close.

Also didn't AMD say they would be able to do it?

Maybe they did...

but I also remember a certain company claiming a while back that they would get Pixar quality graphics from a PS2 I think it was...

So do I Cliffy....so do I.

does he know that Avatar was made scene by scene with each scene rendered by 80,000 processors and 1000TB of ram, Yea we are differently a long away from that level, unless we go cloud and even that is a while off.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

yea i think dev's/pub's want more of both and if Sony and MS can give them what they want/looking for then we'll see some improvements in all areas but if its not streamlined then we could find ourselves paying on Hefty price tag for games.

and game budgets could go through the roof and we don't need that.

It will be interesting to see how the industry deals with the changes. Most devs from what I have heard from devs assets are usally created at much higher levels then end up in the game for verius reasons. And there are plenty of ways to improve graphics by utalising more power without spending a lot more time creating assets like mandating that all games should be 60fps 1080p with plenty of AA and tones of physics bassed objects and particle effects etc.

But I do have a feeling that most developers will go straight to producing more higher quality assets as possible...

yea i agree, but quality shouldn't equal an improvment in grapic's. it should be about innovation in games.

Sadly innovative gameplay is hard to advertise and you have to rely on reviews (that only core gamers read) and word of mouth to sell, where as production values and graphics are easy to market.

true.

i'm still thinking i should have told you about the seizure. i mean you are on my friends list. its just something i didn't think was important. we should talk more often.

another thing that bothers me is difaculty settings. instead of making the game hard. they make your health go down fast, and for me it adds nothing to gameplay. theres is no challenge in that.

Well we have only been freinds on here for a weak or 2 if I remember correctly I guess tho I don't know when you had the seizure, and as long as you are ok it's not really an issue. I hope any after affects are temporary anyway.

As for dificulty settings it would be cool if they actually spent time making smart AI for the higher settings IMO. So while on easy they would act like normal enemies like they are on most games today, for example in most FPS enemies are pretty dumb and run out in the open and take cover with their heads sticking out etc, but imagine on harder dificulty levels they would work as a team take cover where you can't attack them without flanking and flank you when you aren't looking, send out decoys and set traps etc. It would be amazing and really change up the game so plying at higher dificulties wouldn't just be a more challenging where enemies take longer to go down and you go down faster but a really different experiance. I think some games have kind of done it by having them use more advanced spells and drink potions in RPGs etc but I think if they really rampt up the AI so they actually appeared to be smart sometimes rather than lemings as they are in most games these days.

I guess I really just want better AI in general , AI in game hasn't really got much better than Halo, F.E.A.R. and Half-Life really. Rage does some interesting things from what I have heard  with AI how different enemy types act really differently and they all actually use their surroundings and aren't totally scripted. It might be worth me getting RAGE just to see how it works... But I am just rambling now lol, I do that sometimes

not many after affects, but they are apparrent.

yea i can so imagine that. i think Resistance, and KZ mainly KZ3 has some of the smartest AI. i also think GEARS has great AI but also really stupid AI and i don't play many shooters, and there are to many people that glitch online so i don't play online.

ramble on its ok. i've rambled on with Micheal5 in some threads but its cool cause theres something to talk about, and it looks like you have something to talk about.

yea it seems we both want better AI, and maybe next gen we'll see improved AI. i'm not sure whether its power or RAM but PS4 and nextbox should show allot of both.

i don't like Halo but the AI is impressive. yea i heard about Rage AI aswell and will get it soon.

Then lets see you put up or shut up, Cliffy B! Gears 4 on Xbox 720 with Avatar-like graphics would be EPIC, no pun intended

Cliff Blezsinzki = interesting. dice wants more power?

Did you even read what the Dice guy said? he barely mentioned power far less than Cliff actually his focus was on connectivity

oh and we are 15 years away from Avatar level visuals in real time

wait what ??? 15 years??? are you serious???? have you been sleeping the past 15???? look at what you had available to the public 15 years ago..... heck right now I'm on a PC that is 5 years old that I refurbished a couple month ago.... that rig is less powerfull than most smartphone out today..... in 15 years you'll be able to actually process the CGI frames of an avatar quality movie on a PC faster than the super computer did..... heck prognosis are that within 20 to 30 years the processing power of a PC will be close to the processing power of every human brain combined..... not sure we'll be there.... but game in avatar quality graphic at least on PC will be possible way before the 10 year mark.....

now about about developing looking at what MS wants to do it will be cheaper to dev on windows if they actually streamline windows 8 on all platform... the architecture of the hardware will be also redundent... plus devs will find ways to make things cheaper to do as they always have..... and I do seriously belive that we'll have more and more serialized games.... that go retail chapter by chapter and you pay like 10 to 30 bucks per release or maybe 30 for the DVD and then 10 bucks for every new chapter you get.....

Then, Cliff, you should know that it is neither possible nor economically feasible.
Fucking graphics obsession.

it took ~15 years to get Toy story levels of detail and it will likely take ~15 years to get to Avatar level possibly longer if we can't find a good replacement for silicone in the next 5 years. Avartar level detail will require at least 2000 times more powerful systems than we have now (that is inluding a lot of optomisation and not the actual amount of proccessing power used to render which is actually 40,000 times more powerful than a top end PC today at 0.000001 frames per seccond) which is at least 15 years of moores law. I mean Avatar used 1 petabyte of assets just for graphics...

Sorry but you just don't know what you are talking about
