hmmm... i have yet to notice any screen tearing when i play (well actually i have, but not lately, and its usually not very noticable).

but i have definitely noticed the distortion you speak of with the smoke (not so much the rian). especially when i brake, and reverse in 3rd person view., lots of jaggies

It's there, and it's noticeable to me. But I pick out technical shortcomings in console games like a hobby. Heck, even when I've maxed out some PC games (max settings, 1080p, 60fps, oodles of AA and AF) I still find visual shortcomings of the engine or textures and get upset.

For the tearing I notice it most when I'm driving cockpit or front of the car view and when turning. It happens about 15-20% from the top of the screen. Alas, this isn't about GT5 and I don't mean to pick on it. I'm enjoying the gameplay a few hours a day .

naw... youre fine... those are legitimate complaints about it.

but when i do notice the screen tear, it seems thats its usually near the top (and playing it again just now, i was looking for screen tear, and i did see it, but like i said it was near the top).

on a side note, i wonder if the improved performance at all, it seems difficult (for me) to notice the drops in framerate.

OT: both games look amazing to me, i have yet to see Forza 4 in person, so i will have to wait for my final verdict. but so far both games seem to look great with their own pros and cons

Just throw GT5 in the title randomly for an extra 100+ posts. Easy VG monies I tell you! :D

Forza 4 didn't really win the head to head because there was no head to head. Digitalfoundry seems to think they are both as good as it gets and Polyphony seems to be the one that tries to introduce something new in racing sims. I am stating only this because for some (weird) reason you guys are picking on gt5 throughout the thread.

There's also a forza 3 vs forza 4 comparison, its a good article overall.

If you throw in "GT", "Forza" and "comparison" in any order I reckon you're looking at millions.  It's the new Halo vs Killzone.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Cherry-picked (like zarx): "This focus ensures that the game is remarkable, but it's difficult to avoid the conclusion that Polyphony Digital remains the pioneer of the console driving genre"

Most important quote (and disproves what Selnor was trying to say):

"The overall impression we get from playing both games back-to-back is that each has its own strengths: in terms of the handling* and audio Turn 10 could well have moved ahead of its competition while Polyphony's minute attention to detail (to the point of implementing working headlights/dynamic shadows in the cockpit view) plus the sheer range of different driving scenarios remains second to none. Both titles excel in their own ways - especially in terms of visuals"

*note: They didn't really compare the handling

pff you fail at cherry picking, this is cherry picking

"Forza Motorsport 4 is really rather special... looks uncannily realistic owing to the new lighting techniques and the shader work done on rendering materials: steel, aluminium, cloth, plastics, leather, carbon fibre - there are no low resolution textures to speak of and elements retain fidelity even when viewed just six inches away."

Or this: "Secondly, unlike Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit[...], lighting in the environments appears to be "baked in" - pre-rendered, in effect."

Now you are getting it, now it sounds like Forza 4 has lighting so good that it apreas to be backed in and pre-rendered looking, it must look like a pixar movie "Cars" for example!

Yeah, and we all know Pixar movies don't look realistic at all.

Anyway, don't want to take it completely off-topic, but I thought it was worth mentioning how out of context some quotes in this thread are.

They don't? Fk that's news to me, with a name like cars I just assumed that it was some kind of car porn like GT or Forza.

If you want context read the origonal article, quotes exist so you can take things out of context.

Forza's performance level is wholly consistent at 60FPS, GT5 can drop frames and tear, even at 720p (with further frame-rate drops if running in 1080p or 3D modes). Also remarkable is how completely different the audio scheme is between the two games. On these courses at least, there's a pretty strong argument that Forza has considerably more track detail.

Us guys? There was really only one post that even indicated that there was some sort of head to head. The rest of it was just reasonable discussion about GT5 performance or silly staged "fanboy fighting" between reasonable posters.

I agree it's a good article. That's why I haven't spoiled it by posting excerpts. I want people to enjoy reading the whole thing and I know that most of the people who will put in the effort to will be people who actually want to learn something about Forza's game design or game design choices and tech in general. I could've opted for the "Get many gamrPoints!!! GT5 vs FORZA 4!!! X Game wins!!!" route and caused a pointless fight between members who really don't know any better, but I've tried to keep this as the more informed and polite discussion of the technical analysis of Forza (and GT if someone wants to pitch in with reasonable comparisons). We already have that other thread for those who want to fall over themselves drooling over one game or another.

You haven't been that successful.
