You don't need to get a certain amount of points, but typically 90+ points gets you a playoff spot which is 56% of the total points availble in the season. Since the season only has 96 points this year I expect 53points to be enough for a playoff spot. That is why I'm counting down. It's just my estimates.
So right now the blackhawks got 12 points from 6 wins (a win is 2 points) and 1 point from an Overtime or shootout loss (in this case they lost in a shootout) which gives them 13 points. That is number 1 right now but lets say 12 games were played this year instead of 7 and the blackhawks had a record of 6-5-1 (wins, regulation losses, overtime losses) but another teams record was 4-2-6 this team would be higher seed than the blackhawks with less wins because the OT losses gives them more points.
