Forums - Nintendo - Pokemon question - need help sorting this disagreement

Was just having an argument about the effects of perish song with a friend (aren't I cool? xD) - basically, I thought that the perish song effect cancelled completely when you switched out (ie. if you switch back in, it doesn't continue the countdown from when you left off), but my friend insists that the effect is only temporarily cancelled when you switch out, and the countdown continues once the effected pokemon is back in play.

He says "[I'm] normally right, but this time you have to face that [I've] got it wrong." - Am I wrong? Help :(

There you go, dispells all doubts

Current PC Build

CPU - i7 8700K 3.7 GHz (4.7 GHz turbo) 6 cores OC'd to 5.2 GHz with Watercooling (Hydro Series H110i) | MB - Gigabyte Z370 HD3P ATX | Gigabyte GTX 1080ti Gaming OC BLACK 11G (1657 MHz Boost Core / 11010 MHz Memory) | RAM - Corsair DIMM 32GB DDR4, 2400 MHz | PSU - Corsair CX650M (80+ Bronze) 650W | Audio - Asus Essence STX II 7.1 | Monitor - Samsung U28E590D 4K UHD, Freesync, 1 ms, 60 Hz, 28"

It's not hugely specific, but I think it proves me correct. Thanks Bulbapedia :D

Yeah, you were correct. The effect of Perish Song (i.e - The countdown) is placed on the pokemon that hears the song, and will stay frozen if it's switched out by the normal means. Baton Pass will also pass the countdown to the next pokemon you choose, which can essentially mean instant fainting if the countdown was at 1 before using Baton Pass.

Just to confirm (don't want to start bragging and then have to take it back :P), the perish song counter is completely lost if you switch out? Ie. when you switch back in, there is no trace of the counter to be seen? (not including baton pass)

The perish song counter is frozen when you switch out normally, at whatever count it was when you switched out. For example, if the count was at 1 and you switch out your pokemon, if you ever switch it back in, he would die as the counter will reach 0 in that turn.

Actually, disregard my previous post. It's completely cancelled when you switch out the pokemon. The only way to counter this is to use Mean Look (which is often found in the moveset of pokes with Perish Song).

You were correct all along.

You are correct. I've had perish song used against my pokemon before, switched him out, switched him back in, and the timer never started back up for him. It's erased completely, much like confusion and stat raises/drains are.
