Forums - PC - 2 X WD VelociRaptor 10,000 RPM in RAID0 or single SSD?

Im looking to move my 128 GB SATA II SSD from my gaming PC to a new laptop I bought. I've been using this for my gaming drive but it was gettng too small for that anyways. I realized that I need a 256 GB at least.

While shopping for a 256 GB SSDs I noticed that newegg had a sale on these - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136557

I can get 2 of these for about the same price as a single 256 GB SSD and set them up in RAID0 for faster performance.  Sure would be nice to have to have 450 GB for gaming, but how would the speed compare with an SSD drive. Would RAID0 setup speed using these drives be comparable to SATAII SSDs at least?

Any thoughts?

SSDs won't really improve gaming much. The games will load much faster, but the gameplay itself won't be affected.

The best use of a SSD is for installing your OS and most frequently loaded programs onto. If you're not using it for those purposes, it's not really going to benefit you much.

Yeah its just better load times in games I am after. Crysis 1 load time was more than halved when I got an SSD. Faster game installs, faster level loads etc...

I have a 60 GB SATA III SSD as boot drive and its awesome. Windows 7 boots in like 5 seconds after post.

I hear ya though...maybe even one of these VelociRaptors is good enough for gaming.



Hard to tell. There should be Speed comparisons out there. I only have SSD experience never saw a Raid 0 10k RPM System running.



Mind that a RAID 0 configuration doubles your failure points. I don't know how often these 10k drives break down though.

I guess it depends on the games you play. If it's regularly loading new content, then I suppose a SSD would benefit, now that I think about it. Or like Sims, Rise of Nations, etc... take FOREVER to load initially.

I'd consider running a SSD and a Raptor both, then. Raptor for games that load less, SSD for the ones that make you wait more usually.

I imagine the velociraptors in Raid0 will be just as fast if not faster performance than the SSD's and also would give you that extra space. Just be diligent with your backups and be prepared to repair/replace both drives in the event of a failure.

Even in Raid running 10k HDDs comes nowhere near the speed of low-end SSDs.

Though, in a more practical sense, it's absolutely good enough in almost all applications.

Did some research... it seems that when it comes to reading and writing large files Raid0 with these drives would be equal or greater than most SATAII SSDs.

However with smaller files, SSDs absolutely annihilate these, even in raid0.

Sadly I missed the sale as they are back to 199 a piece. I'll probably go the raid route but need to wait for another sale...lol
