Forums - Microsoft - Valve believes Steam on Xbox 360 is still a possibility

VG247

Chet Faliszek has said Valve is still holding out hope that Steam will be made available on Xbox 360 in the future.

Speaking with Develop in an interview, Faliszek reiterated comments made by Valve head Gabe Newell last month, that the decision to not include the service on the console was made by Microsoft and not through any exclusivity deal with Sony.

Faliszek said that there’s “some things going on with Portal 2 right now,” in regards to the firm’s plans on the console but as far as Steam integration was concerned, “we’ll see.”

While Valve has said in the past Sony should be commended for allowing Steam on its system, Faliszek said the firm still has to go through Sony’s approval process in order to update games through the service.

“There’s some big changes that still need to go through, so we’ll have to see,” he said when asked if Steam could provide incremental updates to PS3 games. “We’re open to that and it’d be cool idea but we’re just going to have to wait.

So steam is on PS3 but not the 360. And all they have done so far on PS3 is one update? Whats the hold up?

from what the article says:

Steam is a competitor to Microsoft's GFWL.

Not until Microsoft is willing to concede Game For Windows LIVE platform DONE AND DEFEATED, will anyone see STEAM on XBOX 360.

Of course, by doing that, that would mean another loss and defeated segment among Microsoft's slowly diminishing portfolio.

Microsoft has lost the internet to GOOGLE, FaceBook and others....Microsoft has lost Zune with Zune Marketplace likely to soon follow.....Steam and other services are already making a mockery of GFWL.
XBOX...while doing well, has still only been good enough for second fiddle, and soon to be third. Mobile Windows division has seen little success against Android and IOS. Windows is also threatened daily by obsolescence because of internet Cloud services and a possible and future Android OS launch.

So you gotta ask yourself....Does Microsoft really want to let Steam onto XBOX 360 and XBOX LIVE?

On PS3, Steam provides the following benfits:

1.  Updates are come directly via Steam, allowing the PS3 version of a game to stay perfectly up-to-date with the PC version.  This prevents a situation like Team Fortress 2 from ever happening again, and it allows for cross-platform play between PC and PS3, given the two versions will always be in sync.

2. You're simultaneously logged into both PSN and Steam when playing on PS3, and any Trophies earned while playing are counted as Achievements earned on Steam.  Steam also adds your time spent playing on PS3 to your Steam total.

3. If you bought the PS3 version of Portal 2, you recieved a code to activate the PC version for free.

Points 2 and 3 imply that the PS3 version might access Steam Cloud for its saves, allowing you to pick up on one version where you left off on the other, but I'm not sure if that is the case.  I beat the game on PS3 during the PSN outage, and I didn't have any issues saving.

Well that is pretty handy if you have both Steam and a console.

Keep your hopes up.

Thats what i thought until i read the article posted in this thread.

So does valve wait to update portal 2 until the updates for the ps3 are approved?

I think they have to be approved by Sony, but are downloaded directly through Valve.

I'm not sure on the details, tbh, but I think you're right with that assessment.
