On PS3, Steam provides the following benfits:
1. Updates are come directly via Steam, allowing the PS3 version of a game to stay perfectly up-to-date with the PC version. This prevents a situation like Team Fortress 2 from ever happening again, and it allows for cross-platform play between PC and PS3, given the two versions will always be in sync.
2. You're simultaneously logged into both PSN and Steam when playing on PS3, and any Trophies earned while playing are counted as Achievements earned on Steam. Steam also adds your time spent playing on PS3 to your Steam total.
3. If you bought the PS3 version of Portal 2, you recieved a code to activate the PC version for free.
Points 2 and 3 imply that the PS3 version might access Steam Cloud for its saves, allowing you to pick up on one version where you left off on the other, but I'm not sure if that is the case. I beat the game on PS3 during the PSN outage, and I didn't have any issues saving.
