lestat, I´m considering playing the game, you seem to be quite experienced with it, so tell me..is it possible to beat the game without farming for souls?...I ask because I visited the Dark Souls thread on NeoGaf and many people were asking for advice on the best places to farm for souls and things like that.

So...is it possible but unlikely?...or possible and likely if you get good at the game?

It's very possible and likely to finish the game without farming anything, either souls or shards, from what has been my experience so far. I can't guarantee nothing for the later game bosses as I've not reached them, but you can tackle every area, as long as you're equipped for it, with soul levels far below mine.

To be completely honest, I haven't farmed for souls so far, as I've not required it and I've seen people with much lower level than I am, more advanced in the game. Some parts are frustanting, but they would be anyway even if you were at higher level, because the game depends a lot on the equipment you're carrying (much like Demon's Souls).

So yeah, it's pretty doable to beat the game (from my experience so far) without any kind of farming, especially if you get progressively better in it.

i pretty much Sign this. As for me, i did grind 10 soullevels over my playthrough so far, but the difference wasnt noticeable at all. if i do 120 damage with a hit, or 125 - the boss doesnt care. =)

@topic: i have to stop playing for today, but Dooood!.. the Archives. awesome Location. ^_^ (And this was the first time an enemy with a bow was a threat, he shot down 80% of health with one arrow.. xD)

So, like lestat said, equipment over grinding.

Thanks!...that´s good to hear!..in previous generations I had no problem grinding, farming for whatever items a game had...nowadays I no longer have the patience for that.

You're welcome. To get most of the experience of Dark Souls grinding will be kept to a minimun if not zero as I told you. Of course, getting the platinum or 1000/1000 achievements (if you ever consider those), it will require a lot of grinding, as some unique weapons are very rare drops from enemies, but since it seems you just want to finish the game, it's a non-issue.

@Crystalchild - I really haven't grinded at all. My current SL, 53 (54 when and if I get to the Sen's fortress bonfire with all the souls that I have) is a natural effect of visiting almost all the areas available. The Dukes Archives seems to be one of the hardest areas in the game, along with the Crystal Caves or so I've read.

lestat, I almost forgot..one more thing, what´s with the 'gain/lose your humanity' in the game?...what does it mean and what are the consequences?

if i wanna kindle a bonfire, i go into human form of course, but if i am dead, i am dead.

Ill care for Loot (-Chances, which are increased by Humanity) in another playthrough i guess.

You're getting famous. :D

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

More humanity usually means you get better resistances and do a bit more damage when you're in human form. Also, a larger amount of humanity also increases your chances of finding item drops from enemies, either if you're in undead or human form.

There's also a "Hollow" form, but I haven't been afflicted with it just yet. It seems it's only achieved by dying a lot without recovering your bloodstains and it's a pre-requisite if you want to join the Gravelord Covenant, but other than that I don't know much about it.

@Slimebeast - I've spent much of my game in Undead form. It's hardly worth going into human form, except if you got a large humanity number, which for me hasn't been the case. After losing 4 humanity once in Blightown, I just stopped caring about Human form and Humanity at all. I'll farm it from the rats on the Depths when I start going for items, but other than that, it's not worth it IMO.

I'm just glad to help anyone when it comes to Dark Souls. It's such an amazing game, just as Demon's Souls was. It's hard to find games like these ones nowadays, which rely a lot on the community and help&cooperation between players to get through it and get the most out of it.

The stone shield is a massive wall of epic awesomeness XD. It's so frigging huge (almost the size of my character) and has amazing reductions overall.

oh question, did you (or anyone else) Find a Shield with 100% Magic absorb yet? I'd guess they are nonexistent here, but if someone knows better.. o:

I've got to say - I am new to this sort of game, although I managed to go through the tutorial without dying on my first time around, I was punished severely on the main game, for every single time I missed the block or failed a parry, this game is trully amazing, harsh and unforgivable but at the same time fair, I applaud the developer's for willing to venture to create such a game in the gaming age where the shooters have aim assists and RPG's don't punish deaths at all.

Really is something else.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Best ones I've found were the Crest Shield with 85 and the Stone Shield with 80. I don't know if there's a 100% one, but I bet there's shields with 95% magic reduction (wouldn't mind if there's actually an equivalent to the DSS )
