Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Official Dark Souls Thread - .....It Begins

I'm heading to Sen's Fortress now, game is awesome so far, I wish certain places were bigger too, Darkroot could be so beautiful as a larger forest. and while the new open world structure is cool, I'm still used to going back to the nexus & evacuating, so stuff like going back to Firelink from Quelaag's was really annoying. and I have to say, the bottomless box interface is one of the most stupid I've ever seen, why they didn't make it like Demon's Souls?! and the fact that repeating armor and weapons STILL do not stack makes it even worse.

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

What is a good weapon to ascend to a divine weapon?

It depends on your playstyle. I went with a Longsword, as it was fast enough to attack the skeletons and stun lock them, even if it did low damage, even at +10. A Spear also works wonders to keep them away and attack them during their annoying rolls.

Hm, if I kill Solaire early do I still get his equips?

Yup. You can kill him anytime after NG+ starts, since he doesn't move from his inital spot for some reason (there's no way to do his quest line in NG+).

@Luvtospooge - My stats are:

Level -> 193
HP -> 1590
Stamina -> 192
Vitality -> 40
Attunement -> 12
Endurance -> 60
Strength -> 60
Dexterity -> 18
Resistance -> 11
Intelligence -> 25
Faith -> 48
Humanity -> 30

Left Hand -> Grass Crest Shield/Ivory Talisman
Right Hand -> Black Knight Greataxe +5/Pyromancy Flame (ascended) +5
Head -> Havel's Helm
Body -> Havel's Armor
Arms -> Havel's Gauntlets
Legs -> Havel's Leggings
Rings -> Havel's Ring/Ring of Favor and Protection

Those are some nice stats! Why'd you go all Havel though? For the poise?

Also I made the greatsword of artorias ( I heard that it's THE best sword in the game) and it needs 20 intel/20 faith...I'm wondering if it's worth it? I have 18 faith, 15 intel.

Basically, what I was plannning to do is either:

Get 20 intel/20 faith and equip Greatsword of Artorias. Then equip  smough chest,leggings and arms and Gold hemmed hood.

OR

Fire Demon Great Machete +5( Beast weapon, reminds me of Dragon Bone Smasher...I plan to upgrade it to +10, but for some reason I can't go past +5 even though I gave Vamos Large Flame Ember), 40 strength ( Im at 31 strength right now), then wear a mixed set ( Gold hemmed hood, Stone Chest, Black Iron Leggings +1 and Gauntlets of Favor). Furthermore, with 40 strength, I could equip Black Iron Shield.

Hmm, decisions,decisions...

P.S. Soul level 84 right now...Gonna get to 100 and then complete the game.

Greatsword of artorias the best sword in the game? I haven't heard anything about that myself, plus it's scaling isn't really that good for any stat, so I don't see how, nor does it have any kind of special attack.

And yes, I went full Havel for the poise. Poise makes all the difference on PVP, especially when you're facing 2H Lightning Claymore wielders since you can be hit and avoid the usual stunlocks that those weapons create, allowing you to hit them back in the extremely long animation times.

Also, to go further than +5 Fire after giving Vamos the Large Fire Ember, you need White Titanite Chunks instead of the Green Titanite Shards you used to get to +5. Also, you have to ascend it to +6 instead of reinforcing it.

@blkfish92 - The suggested PVP threshold is 140-150 in Dark Souls, though you can find good PVP at my current SL.

Gettin abit bored with using the black knight axe all the time =/

Reaaaally hoping the patch buffs most strength weapons but I'm not really counting on it. I'm close to making either a mage or faith guy but plan on using them mostly as melee types.

There's a lot of weapons you can switch, being a STR build.

Sometimes I vary between the Dragon King Greataxe +5 (especially for those who don't know what the special attack is XD), a Large Club +15 with Crystal Magic Weapon (820 attack power), the Dragon Tooth +5 (this is plenty of fun, as even the normal 1H R1 attack can ground normal enemies and PVP players with less than 20 Poise) or Smough's Hammer +5.

I switch to the Dragon axe on a rare occasion, mostly for the R2 which did waaay more damage than I expected to when I +5'd it.

As for other weps, I'll admit the Large Club is pretty good (haven't got it back yet since my last save was deleted by accident!) but for the most part, based off what me and my friend have been talking about, it seems like Mages/Faith peeps can make better use of str weapons than pure Strength types can. She's went through 2 faith chars now and has been telling me the numbers on some of the weps - they're pretty damn high, though have the advantage of having split damage. Still, it seems like a str player would have to use enchants to compete but it's not as easy nor effective as it was in Demon's Souls due to changes such as limited casts. Of course it'd be no prob for quick pvp sessions but I'd like to have consistent damage and not have to ng+++ just to get Crystal Magic Weapon multiple times.

The thing to keep in mind is that as Mages/Faith chars increase their weapon damage by specing more into their main stat (faith/int), they're also getting access to really high damage spells. While this was the case for Demon's Souls, it didn't matter because offensive spells were pretty bad in PvP for the most part but spells in general got buffed really well this time around. Wrath of the Gods combines really well with Faith-melee builds. This game's version of "Homing Soul Arrow" got buffed and though you can dodge it, you have to be careful because if you do manage to get hit by multiple, that's a huge chunk off your health.

Me and my friend are still talking about it and she just seems really convinced that strength's hardly gonna get any better, and I kinda gotta agree. I think getting rid of the "Crushing" upgrade path was a pretty bad idea, which is unfortunate since weapon enchantments were also toned down.

What do both Vitality and Strength upscale?

Vitality increases your total HP. Up until 40 you get high increases (20s - 30s per point), after 40 each points nets little gains (10s).

Strength allows you to equip heavier weaponry and armoury and also gives you higher attack power for weapons that Scale damage with the Strength stat, such as the Club (A), Black Knight Greataxe (B) and so on.
