Can't say I've heard of Bel-Air. That's pretty insane they'll insure you for under $3000 with an accident and a ticket, but I'm paying $3500 accident/ticket free. Aviva really does suck ass.

Glad you've been accident free for a while now, good to hear.

Age has a lot to do with it. I'm 29 now...this was when I was 27. Once youre 25+ you get different rates. I remember one way insurance when I was 21 on a 1995 dodge avenger was 3500 bucks, accidnet and ticket free.

Wow man it's time to change insurance companies. I pay about 1200 a year on a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage. And they've never raised my premium even though I was involved in an accident (not at fault though) and I got all the money I've ever payed into car insurance back and then some because of that accident (seriously get a lawyer if you get into a car accident)

Although I only have the most basic car insurance.

Wow I wish I only paid $1200/year. Mine's a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt LT (not even the faster SS version) and mine's $3500.

I'll get a discount once I'm 21 years old but it's damn high right now.

Then you're definitely gettin raped by your insurance company. I have a 2008 Chevy Impala SS and I pay around $1,800.00 a year with Progressive.

Wow man that's crazy. In Canada or somewhere else?

Plus are you 21? For some reason it gets a lot cheaper when you hit 21. Its also cheaper if you're married and/or a home owner.

The insurance broker I use has a tool on their website for calculating insurance rates and I found out that if I was 21 right now I'd be paying $2800/year compared to $3500/year (for being 19).

I also found out that if I was a girl (same age and driving record) it would be $2800/year. That's sexism if I've ever seen it. Imagine if they charged Asians more for insurance based on the stereotype that they're bad drivers? People would be outraged.

I'm in Minnesota and I'm 24(for another 24 hours). I also have renter's insurance through them, which also helps. Yeah, I hate that they use gender in insurance rate calculations. Don't know why that's not illegal.

Oh yeah man being 29 is a big advantage as far as rates go.

I'm just 19 (20 in a month) so my rates are still high based solely on the fact that I'm a teenage male. Using their insurance calculator I found out if I make it to 21 without an accident/ticket my rates drop from $3500 to $2800 so that's a fair bit more reasonable. And as you mentioned 25 is another insurance milestone.

Yeah its kind of insane they can charge men higher rates than women. If they say its based on statistics that males get in more accidents than that's fine, but why don't they charge different amounts based on race as well? I'm sure there's statistics out there they could use to determine which race of driver gets in the most collisions. How come they can be sexist but not racist?

I don't really care that much but it would be an interesting topic for debate.

Happily once you are 25 usually car insurance will go down! also you can rent a car in most states!

Yeah, in Minnesota you can rent a car at 21, but you gotta pay an extra fee until you're 25.

Really ! that is interesting to learn. Most other places you have to be 25 or you get nothing.

Damn that's lame. 25 seems a bit ridiculous as a minimum age requirement.

I’ve been with the Hartford auto insurance for years now and they’ve kept my rates low, given me discounts and even though I’ve never had to file for claims, I regularly check rates quoted by other companies but so far nobody has given me a better policy.
