Forums - Nintendo - Reuters: Nintendo Faces End Of Era After 3DS Flop

also, let me copy my response to the article about share prices dropping:

asking Nintendo to make a phone is like asking Nokia to make a handheld, and we all know how that worked out!
It's simply too far away from their current area of expertise to guarantee such a product makes an impact.
People would buy loads of Nintendophones at start, but how many would continue buying them if they didn't end up also being fantastic phones!?
If they were merely average phones would they honestly still pose a serious threat to the iPhone??

Asking Nintendo to make a phone is also basically the same as telling Nintendo to go third party, another thing no one wants!
What kind of phone do you expect them to make? One with its own proprietary OS and all? That level of investment would only mean they have considerably less man-power to make the games that earn them the big bucks! Hell, they could barely make half decent OSs for Wii and 3DS, let alone a complete smartphone OS on the level of what Apple has!
Dedicating the resources required to make something on that level is only likely to ruin the company...

Which means the remaining option is Nintendo developing on an existing platform like Android, ie: an open platform which they do not control and where anyone can publish games without Nintendo's permission! Say goodbye to royalties for third party published games! Nintendo may still sell you the phone, but they would essentially be just another third party developer on it... think about that!

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

The whole slidepad add-on accessory is a Big F U to early adopters. It looks very awkward to use and it'll make the 3DS massive and unpocketable. Nintendo should have included dual analogs right form the beginning or not included them at all. I'm really disappointed in Nintendo. I regret having bought the 3DS last month.

Nintendo is forcing anybody to buy it... None of thier games use it, it is only for third parties and again is not necesary...

OP: Investors have the idea that they can force nintendo to move to the cheap app/games market, but they are wrong... And the 3ds is going to sell like crazy this and next year, so I can see them eating their own words in a some months...

These articles are like a gift that keeps on giving. Here's another example. With statements like "the 3DS stinks" and "Think: More Farmville, less Mario" you know you're dealing with high quality journalism.

OMG that was even worse, lol.

The problem is that people who write these articles have no idea of how the videogame industry really works. When you write about movies, theatre, books, etc. you must have a writer who has an idea of those fields, but that doesn't seem to be teh case with videogames.

why everyone is trying to bring Nintendo down?

is that a new SOny move? Shitting the other party knowing that Vita is dead?

I mean is 3D console is dead... how dead is Vita? nothing new for that!

and failure does not means not being as good as the past console but fial to sell and 3DS will not fail, is not failing!

Should states finally forbid or really strongly limit short selling, would we still see analyses that look made on purpose to drive shares down?

Nintendo made some big mistakes, and looks like it doesn't focus well yet the gen just started, but Sony survived to far worse errors and MS even managed to profit while committing even worse errors, and a lot more than once, with its richest cash cow, Windows, so why should Ninty die having made smaller and correctable mistakes and owning some of the richest franchises in gaming world (and amongst them the richest one absolutely)?

Obviously I starkly disagree with their opinion, but even despite that, that has got to be the most pathetic article I've read in quite some time.

Nintendo would get laughed out of the market if they made their own proprietary smartphone OS. There is only room for iOS, Android, Blackberry OS and (in the future) Windows Phone 7. There are specific reasons for why each and every one of the above operating systems are relevant.

Blackberry OS is the over-the-hill dinosaur of the pack but Blackberry is the gold standard in the business world and while many people are jumping off the Blackberry bandwagon, they still have a solid core of loyal non-business customers too. Especially here in Canada. Blackberry is popular with young people here still.

And iOS is popular because 1) It is a stronger multimedia platform than Blackberry OS. 2) The Apple and iPhone brands are very strong. While Android beats iOS in smartphone OS marketshare, the Android brand isn't as strong because Android is a fragmented platform. And the individual manufacturers like HTC, Samsung and Motorola don't have the brand power that Apple does. 3) The iPhone had the benefit of coming out before Android. The first Android (HTC's G1) didn't come out until 16 months after the iPhone and it took awhile for Android to really pick up steam in the market.

And Android is relevant and the no.1 smartphone OS today because A) They have an open platform with many manufacturers working with the OS and B)They beat Windows Phone 7 to the punch by 2 years. Giving them a massive head start in the app market department.

Windows Phone 7 will be more of a player in the future. They have support from multiple manufacturers, Microsoft's stringent licensing policies prevent crappy manufacturers from putting out crap with the Windows Phone 7 name (there are lots of crappy Android handsets in the wild) and they have a slick and sexy OS.

A Nintendo smartphone OS would fail because Apple and RIM (Blackberry) are pretty much the only manufacturers that can get away with a proprietary smartphone OS at this point. Like I said, Blackberry is the business world gold standard. And Apple filled a need for a multimedia-focused smartphone before Google and Microsoft stepped into the game (Microsoft did have Windows Mobile 6 but that wasn't serious competition by any means).

The idea of an Android-powered Nintendophone is interesting but who knows how successful it would be financially. It would be a huge departure from Nintendo's business model. For one, they wouldn't get any more licensing fees from other developers. They'd have to make their revenue off selling the hardware, their first-party software and through whatever deals they set up with cellular carriers. The Xperia Play bombed but to be fair, Sony didn't do shit with Playstation Suite. And the Xperia Play from what I've been reading isn't all that good as a smartphone. It's basically an overpriced medicore smartphone with a slide-out gamepad.

To post above: "3DS stinks" That`s what i call being neutral! :D

All this demise warnings aren`t really surprising - and with some sense aswell. When PS3 came out and "failed" to repeat PS2`s success everyone called it dead. It`s not so much that it didn`t well at it`s beginning, it failed to repeat PS2`s success by a long shot. The same is happening, so far, with 3DS. Yes it`s selling better, but considering it`s the successor to a 140+ platform, it seems that it won`t enjoy the same success.
And it`s here that things get complicated.
Investors and companies don`t seem to realize that there are things you just can`t replicate. It`s like a band that has an album that will make every album pale in comparison to it.

Seeing how strong will this season be for 3DS (probably one of the best of it`s life), investors and companies seem to be blind to this. Mario Kart DS sold millions and millions and millions and still sells well and for some reason no one cares that a new Mario Kart is coming and that it might sell millions and millions again?
Super Mario 3DLand might not be the sequel to New Super Mario Bros, but honestly, if people don`t put some faith on Mario kart 7, a sequel to NSMB probably won`t change that. SM3D Land will surely sell very well. From what i see it mixes some of the best of 2D and 3D without seeming "hard" to play.

So, should Nintendo make games for smartphones - a market that soon enough will become a red ocean of applications and 0.99 games? Nintendo succeeded by making it`s own blue ocean. Instead of trying to make Nintendo go another route, why not support or request Nintendo to follow it`s own route?
Nintendo might just make more money that way than with a few bucks games.

More, why should Nintendo follow Apple`s route when it has a huge library of games for NES, SNES, GB/GBA/GBC, N64 and GC games it could sell for cheap and even develop partnerships with 3rd parties to create business oportunitties, like for example: "buy Nintendo game, get discount or one free game of 3rd parties"
I think it`s time Nintendo really do something will it`s virtual console and Wii/DSiware games and really do use it for something meaningful. Do TV commercials so people could learn they can get these awesome games for cheap too!

No offence but these people do this stuff for a living. SUre they are not always right but I put more faith in their predictions than some random forum poster.

You put faith in people who believe its better for Nintendo to put their games on iPhone instead of their own platforms?

lol

I think some forum posters have more sense than the so called “professionals” your talking about.

Its not like the 3DS has been out for so long and had loads of games to make it sell but failed to do so and then calling it doomed.

The price was wrong and there were no games to sell but that’s changed (price) and games are coming now.
