Forums - Gaming - What is all the fuss about a second analog on a handheld? Why is it so important?

What's the problem with the grip? I mean I have about 200 hours on MHP3 and I dont see any problem with that type of controlling... In fact all those millions were sold using this type of configuration so... No, another stick is not going to make any difference at least in japan...

the new super mario sold more than 20millions on the DS, pokemon is already above 12millions, mario kart about 20 millions as well... None of those games needed a second stick, FPS? The touchscreen is miles ahead of any stick, but at the end of the day, who is going to get a FPS on the 3ds or vita over a PC version?...

Have you even looked at a 3ds lately? It's reversed.

There's literally no good way to play the game properly on 3ds with no second analog.

This is exactly why the peripheral came out.

But don't mind me, continue going off topic about other games that have nothing to do with the second stick. Just because you can name best sellers that don't use a stick, it doesn't mean nintendo isn't interested in OTHER things to add ON TOP of those best sellers.

Also, to answer your question, people on the go or traveling who want to play an FPS.

I really don't understand some people's disregard for systems that do not feature dual analog, I never got it for the PSP and now for the 3DS. I'm not saying that this sudden semi uturn illustrates a degree of short sightedness at Nintendo, I personally would've including a second analog stick if I were Nintendo.

I'm also not quite sure as some people are working this into a sort of 'Nintendo is d0med' scenario, IMO Nintendo are actually coming out of this quite well assuming that only a small selection of games use this add-on. Sure they look stupid, but this has secured this a major new MH game, with the possibility for more. This could've turned out much worse for Nintendo.

This video speaks volumes:

Because dual analogues is the bestest control scheme ever and the only way to play real games for real adults and not some kiddy trash

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

you can't claw on the 3DS apparently. thats why you need the second analog stick.

Dual analog isn't needed for mh. Played tri with mote and nunchuck throughout and it felt great. Willing to try this next mh because the useless claw method is gone.

Saying handheld without 2nd analog and no claw method is OK for MH because of wiimote/nunchuck.

I guess this case is closed.

+1 for saying claw method is useless. Confirmed for having never played the game on anything beside wii.

A horrible control scheme, there is no precise aiming at all using the XYBA buttons to aim.  It is barely usable in Mercs 3D which has a slow pace, for any modern FPS it would not work.

I dunno. He's using the default controls and I think the FPS controls settimgs are actually better. Not too shabby, eh?  Of course a second analog nub would be better but the touchscreen and the d-pad take up a lot of the slack (weapon swapping, melee, 180 turning, grenades, etc).  To each his own, I guess.

The Touch screen already acts as a second analog stick.. In fact, it is a better alternative because it's more like a mouse.

I would never want a second analog stick on the 3DS.

This. Well, almost. I don't mind a second analog stick as it provides more flexibilty and flexibility is always a good thing. However, I think the touch screen does more than a second stick would, but if the option was there from the start for those who would prefer it, no problem. A redesign so soon after lwith a second analog is not needed imo. As for the Vita, since its only touch screen is the gameplay screen and using it heavily would mean you'd be blocking your own view, a second analog stick is more needed than on the 3DS.

And after buying a PSP, getting disappointed then eventually getting a DS, I agree that some experiences shouldn't be on a portable. I have no problem with dual analog sticks though.

That wasn't bad, it looked very playable for most, but that wouldn't fly for me. Nor would it work for a less forgiving game.
