Videogames are for geeks/nerds.

This is a concept my girlfriend seems to believe. No matter how many people tells her that it's OK or that they also play games, she doesn't seem to take that idea off her mind. She's surprised when she learns that her colleagues and so many people around her play games, but after the shock she goes back to 'it's for geeks anyway'. According to her in Japan playing games is more geeky than in the West, but I have a hard time believing that... it's probably the environment she grew up with.

 

Fortunately, she respects me so much that I can play a game all day, all week and she won't say anything.

I still have that stigma burned into my brain from, like, 1995.  I can't get over it.  I know that I see PC games actually selling for less than their console counterparts and I see good PCs selling for $500 or so but I still have it in my head that I can't afford PC gaming.  I also have the idea that PC games crash all the time, that they can't run at decent specs on anything that I can afford, that their controls are overly complicated (even though there are tons of console style controllers available for them), and that they take forever to get running.

i believe that when people say that they are generally reffering to ps3 exclusives like uncharted 2, god of war 3, killzone 3 etc not multiplats...

true. While I will say some of those PS3 exclusives are very impressive graphically for this gen I don't think they are "amazingly" better quality than any X360 games like some people like to tout. I can still tell they are from this gen of consoles. To me there are some mutiplats on X360 that look just as impressive graphically as the PS3 exclusives you are referring to.

while i wouldn't say that theres a massive difference between any ps3 exclusive and games on the 360 in terms of graphics i also can't say that i've seen anything on 360 that looks as good as the games i mentioned but thats my opinion

one myth i've seen is that some nintendo console owners for example say that owners of the HD consoles prefer graphics over gameplay, which i consider to be nonsensical... imo i've seen games on the HD consoles that offer just as much or more gameplay value than what i've seen on other platforms, in addition to great graphics, deep story lines etc

Japanese games don't innovate.

I see the same level of innovation in Japanese and Western games TBH. I don't know what's so 'innovative' about recent Western games.

I swear this is the biggest most annoying out there...one of my co-workers said, in a conversation regarding all things meda/entertainment, 'but video games aren' real'....I mean bitch, twilight ain't real either >_> I'm too nice while working so I let it pass with a more politically correct answer...but people look down on gamers for no good friggin reason

on a positive note, my gf understands that gaming is my thing...it's pretty much the only hobby I strongly persue...she encourages me to buy games, buy me games and even wants me to get the PSV...I also helped her realize that she herself is a gamer, given the right type of games. SHe was/is hooked on critter crunch, peggle, Layton etc. everyone's a gamer, they just don't know it yet since they haven't got the chance to experience games that appeal to them..so they rant on and judge others due to their own ignorance

and also as mentioned above, the hd owners care about graphics mainly crap is annoying and hypocritical....clearly shown when a good looking game comes to their company of preference, especially the 'next gen' ones. then we see oohs and aahs about graphics..or the comments on man i can't wait to see xxx in hd or upped visuals. double standards at its finest. great graphics are friggin awesome, it really adds to the experience..it never was nor it will be be all end all for gamers, doesn't matter what console you own

How about the myth that all gamers are lazy? While im sure some are, I know myself and many other gamers that have full time jobs, chores, kids they take care of, schooling. I work a full time job, taking college courses part time, doing renovations on my home, doing other work in a side business. I keep very busy, but I manage to get a good amount of gaming in as well. I know others just like this. Gaming is our hobby, just like gardening would be a hobby for someone, or knitting, or any other side activity people do for fulfillment.

About the videogames are for geeks/nerds thing... I blame television and movies, they portray gamers in this fashion most the time, which is why that old stereotypes still exists in my opinion.
