california. had it since more than 10 years ago, and popular since 8 years ago. friend got 3 stores in SF alone (the one he owns, not the other ones around the corner and down the street, etc. etc.)

I could be wrong, but I believe it is called "Bubble Tea" here, and it is not particularly popular but is growing in popularity regularly ...

In Tintin there's a general named Tapioca but other than that, never heard of it.

Southern California....in asian areas, there are more tea shops than there are Starbucks.
