Forums - Politics - Man, why are American's so upset about Obama's Bus?

haters gonna hate.

Maybe it's similar to the contraversy over the recent Train contract the UK government decided on. The UK government had a decision to make deciding on what company had the best deal to create new trains, the last UK train manufacturer or a German one, they decided on the German one as it was 'better for the tax payer'.

Of course, relating this back to Obama's situation it's a matter of scale. Should Obama buy and employ the best armoured bus he can get or the local armoured bus he can get. The UK incident was worth over 1 billion pounds, this isn't.

Hmm, pie.

I went to MSNBC.com, foxnews.com and cnn.com. The big three news channels in America only one had this in the news. I bet most people can guess which news source was talking about this and what it says about the motivations of the people talking about it.

Well considering I quoted CNN I'd assume they would have it on their news channel lol. Edit: just checked and it isn't suprising!

FoxNews of course had the story in the headlines of the politics section. Source

MSNBC.com didn't have the story in its headlines anymore, but it was earlier and the story remains on the site. Though they seem to take aim at Republicans for critiscising it. Source, though they don't really mention Canada much in the story, nothing like what the CNN and NewYorkPost had to say!

Well, I look at cnn and bbc  a lot and did not once see it as a top story. Still currently the only site it remains in the political section is fox.news.   I am just going to leave this at my original position that most people are not concerned with this issue. So I will excuse myself from its discussion.

The American media =/= Americans.

Although it does seem passing hypocritical that he is taking creepy ass, custom-built Canadian Death Bus (instead of, say, a Chevy Volt) to talk about American jobs, you can always count on the media to harp on the stupidest aspect of something. If there's anything they should be attacking, it's this stupid campaign tour itself. No plans to sell, no announcements to make, just politics on the taxpayer's dime.

it costs in normal peoples eyes a lot of money and inconsevable how a bus can costs 1.1 million.

normally we would ignore, BUT with lots of people without jobs and bad economy we bitch about any dollar spent.

i'm sure other presidents used this same bus, i think i saw bush did. but in 2004 economy was fine and thus no one paid attention to things like this

I think that more than anything, the problem is that he's going on day 935 of his presidency to promote a jobs bill or jobs plan.

Rather than, you know, try to create jobs on Day-1. Of course, I'd argue that he did try a jobs bill near Day-1. It failed, and this attempt is nothing more than smoke and mirrors for one of the worst presidencies in recent American history.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

It wouldn't send any message to trade partners because it wouldn't make any headliness if he was driving around with american car.

yea. let Obama campaign in a pinto, miata, or a bus that's eco friendly. that would never make the news.

whts really fuk'd up is its likely funded by campaign contrabutions

I have noticed in politics that people are often willing to accept and/or rationalize something for a politician/party they support while the same act would be condemned for a politician/party they don't support ... As support for a politician/party falls you will see more and more petty complaints directed towards their actions until (eventually) people complain about politicians/parties doing the right thing.

While Obama is still far from hitting that point, now that his approval rating is in the 40% range he is no longer untouchable; and he will face more and more critical voices from people who believe he is being wasteful or acting in a way which isn't consistent with his current political message. In the case of the Bus, people are being critical because they believe he wasted taxpayer money on what is (really) a campaign expense and, while most informed people know it isn't this simple, they believe that pushing a jobs agenda while not making an effort to "Buy American" is inconsistent.
