Forums - Politics - USA has the highest incarceration rate. Why?

To be fair America does not have the highest rate of crime - they just have a very high rate of crimes and the ability to track down and lock up the people who commit the crimes. But for a developed country Americas crime rate is shocking.

I wish the UK was red.

I come from china, you are right, personal wealth is an important factor.

There are two major reasons:

1. The main reason is that american jails are filled with harmless drug users, not real criminals who harm others.

2. Locking people up is a business in the USA. So there are many people who will earn more money if more people are locked up, so these influential people have an interest to have as many people in jail as possible.

I would say because a number of people/corporations make a bunch of money locking people up, and in a another part we were founded by restricting and nosy puritans. They often worry about other people are doing and want to lock them away for it. Epically if it makes them feel good.

There are many good things about the USA, but having so many in prison is not one of them.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

I've never understood how America makes money out of prisoners? Here it's the opposite so we try to keep people out of prisons and reduce their sentances.

America doesn't, but here some prisons are run by corporations which make money out of having prisoners.
