Supercharging Android: Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility

8/15/2011 04:35:00 AM

Since its launch in November 2007, Android has not only dramatically increased consumer choice but also improved the entire mobile experience for users. Today, more than 150 million Android devices have been activated worldwide—with over 550,000 devices now lit up every day—through a network of about 39 manufacturers and 231 carriers in 123 countries. Given Android’s phenomenal success, we are always looking for new ways to supercharge the Android ecosystem. That is why I am so excited today to announce that we have agreed to acquire Motorola.

Pretty strange move from google to support Android legally.. they should have get licenses for the stuff they needed.. now they are buying Motorola just for the 20.000plus patents Motorola has.... will they make an ultimate android phone destroying the competion?

this is also a nice one http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2011/08/most-android-vendors-lost-their-linux.html

google is gonna fuck up its brand name

andoird will go extinct soon if its not already gonna die the way it has been fragmenting

Saying "shit just got real" is quite an overstatement.

Motorolla was a Google Android only OEM anyways so in the scope of things, nothing really changes. I get why they did it (patents) but in the grand scheme of things, this really isn't something completely earth shattering.

Other OEM's must be pissed though as much as they will pretend this is a good move for everyone...

Odd choice (Awful brand with a vanishing market share) and odd business dedcision. I must be missing something very obvious.

Motorola owns over 20,000 patents.

1. They have most phone patents out of any company out there.

2. If Motorolla was for sale, they really can't allow MS to get another partnership or to buy them instead

3. Motorolla was the cheapest way for them to get in to the OEM business, and hence show rest of the OEM's they "care" and will defend Android against lawsuits

That number is a little decieving as very few of their pattents are related to the operating system. Motorolla never had a smartphone OS of their own...

Still i'm sure Apple and MS wont be able to sue them for some things.

Oh I know,  in fact not all of them even relate to the cell phone business either.  But the majority of them are, and it does give Google some ammo  of its own against the onslaught of lawsuits it is getting.  Although some of them are deserved if the patents are legit

This is great news.

1) Hopefully it will help Google (and its manufacturer partners) push back the patent hoard of MS and Apple.
2) Motorola Android devices might all drop the special UI crap and focus solely on Android "vanilla" offerings.... meaning I'll be able to get a Nexus-like device on Verizon. :) ... without rooting. ;)

Most of those patents are hardware related.

Still the next time Apple sues on a software patent they can countersue on a hardware one....( the way they grant patents these days it's not that hard to find one that someone might have breached..)
