Forums - Nintendo - Odd problem with Wii. Edit: Yup, it's dead

Basically today i popped Smash Bros Brawl out of my Wii, put Other M in, and when the Wii automatically booted due to disc insertion, nothing happened. The green light was on, but no video signal was out to my TV, and the Wii remote's light blinked like it was still turned off.

After power cycling a ton of times, i got it around to the point where it would send a black screen signal to my TV, but kept doing everything else. More power cycling got me around to getting to the Wii Menu, but it wouldn't boot Other M when i clicked on the disc channel. Thinking something was amiss, i tried Bomberman 93 (a VC game), and it wouldn't boot that either.

At the end of my tether, i tried one last trick: Wii Maintenance Mode (hold plus and minus on the Wiimote when you're at the "Health and Safety" screen, then press A, and it'll enter a mode telling you that the Message Board can't be used), and it finally ran me through to Other M. Other M froze on me once, but i then went through again and everything came out right, got through the first hour or so of play (to the point of the game where you see that cute little furry critter that turns out to be baby Ridley), saved, quit.

I wonder if the old launch Wii is finally kicking the bucket on me...

Well, the first thing to try out after getting it to work would be to see if it works again or if your fix was just a one time occurence.

My fix did work twice in a row. Other M froze, i had to pull the plug, and i rebooted (just to be safe i did Maintenance Mode again) started from my last save-point

What i need to try is if it'll go without safe mode again, and if this error was a one-shot deal

I've had problems booting up the Wii games intermittently from the beginning of the console's life, and have mostly accepted it

I wonder if i can rewrite my Wii's firmware, kinda reset all parameters while preserving my stuff (including the non-copyable files). Homebrew should offer me some options, given all the crap they can do with Wii, i should surely be able to fix mine without having to pay Nintendo, who would likely just zap my system memory and screw me over anyway

It seems that I may need to reseat my NAND or motherboard or something. From brief research, Maintenance Mode was the right idea, as it bypasses firmware issues and just runs software

Yup, 24 hours later and this thing is definitely dead. Called Nintendo, and since i had to have the disc drive repaired back in January, this thing's still under warranty, so the repair is free. Plus if they have to replace it, they can transfer all my data, if the NAND module isn't too far gone (which it wasn't, as of yesterday i could access my Other M save data, and create new save data in Other M just fine, so here's hoping)

Just go back to my N64 and maybe buy Okamiden earlier than i had planned...

I have a launch wii too and I'm experiencing more and more problems with booting games. I hope it doesn't bite the dust on me
