Forums - Sony - Sony's Experia Play sees price drop, from £499 to £299.

Online retailers cut the price by half

Six months is a long time in the mobile world. At the start of the year, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play was being talked about as THE big mobile phone release of 2011. But into August and the price of it looks to be in freefall. At least wth some retailers.

It's still a decent handset though, despite getting a three-star review from us. You see, it wasn't the all-powerful gaming device that we'd hoped for. That was reflected in early games sales figures, which looked far lower than you might expect for a such a high-profile gaming device.

With that in mind, maybe the phone just hasn't caught the public's imagination? It seems odd that under four months after it hit the shelves, online retailers are reducing the price substantially. According to the Inquirer, eXpansys has reduced the price of the Xperia Play by almost half, with the price dropping from £499 to £289. Other sites, including Play and Amazon, are also now selling the device at a similar price of £299. Bad news for Sony Ericsson perhaps, but good news for you, the consumer, if you want a SIM-free model. Contract prices seem pretty stable though, at least for now.

If you do fancy going SIM-free, it's worth a look if you like a bit of gaming in your life. It's not just about the gaming either, with the Xperia Play also packing Android Gingerbread 2.3, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, an embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor, a five-megapixel camera and a four-inch multi-touch screen. If that ticks the boxes, go check out those deals at the retailers mentioned.

Ow.. is this thing still alive? I don't even think they released new "Playstation Suite" games since the release in April.. >_>

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Now that's what i call a price cut!

I guess people would rather have a slide out keyboard in the phone than a rack of gaming buttons. Oh well.

they should have went ahead and made vita phone capable.

Compared to other phones I don't think it's worth it.

I have one and its suprising how many people have never even heard of the phone.  I have explained my phone to tons of people (happily I might add).

It is a great phone, tho I originally went through 3 at the Verizon store before one of them worked correctly.....
