From the article:
"The Kinect can be used to capture 3D data by sending out thousands of infrared dots from a projector and then measuring how long they take to ping off of an object and come back to a CMOS sensor."
No, that is not how Kinect works.
Also the demonstration in the video is completely bogus. You cannot wave Kinect a few inches from your object and get any meaningful data at all. (Of course you would also need the position and angle of the projector to correlate all the images into a single 3D picture but that's just a minor point).
Nice to see all those ideas people come up to use Kinect for, but when will we actually see a real, good game made for Kinect - you know, the actual purpose that freakin' thing was made for? Apparently everybody is busy trying to find application for that thing that have nothing to do with gaming...
they do need a great game for the Kinect for sure...what about that sega exclusive game for the Kinect...
that looks great....

That's exactly how Kinect works.
Anyway, I wonder how usable the actual results will be. 3D scanning with Kinect isn't new, it was probably the very first thing Kinect hackers did. But the resulting 3D models usually look ridiculous because of the technical limitations of the Kinect sensor (resolution etc.)
