No, that is not how Kinect works.

That's exactly how Kinect works.

Anyway, I wonder how usable the actual results will be. 3D scanning with Kinect isn't new, it was probably the very first thing Kinect hackers did. But the resulting 3D models usually look ridiculous because of the technical limitations of the Kinect sensor (resolution etc.)
