I totally disagree.

In my eyes, Sony has been forcing innovation nobody wants or needs at the minute, damaging its financials. Look at 3D, internet TV, Blu-Ray. Sure, in years to come there might be rewards from these areas, but Sony certainly aren't playing it safe. You can't play safe as Sony.

I'd say Sony are more boring these days, but as I say there's hope - the S1 Tablet especially reminds me of an older Sony.

Yeah agreed, I wouldn't say Sony are a money minded company at all, quite the opposite in fact.

IMO, more people seeking lower ends gears is partially economy. I think the major thing is the separation of money. With less people having more money and more people having less money, you're bound to have less consumers spending on premium items.

Phillips pretty much sold it's tv brand to some Asian company, since they've been making losses for years as well.

I knew Sony's TV division wasn't exactly a moneyspinner, but I am actually shocked about that this will be the 8th consecutive loss making year for them. I thought it would've been only the last 4 or 5.

The common thread here from some seems to be that people arent buying the better Sony TV but are instead buying a cheaper and inferior alternative...

Thats simply not the case... cheaper? yes.. inferior? not a bit of it. The new Samsungs for instance are cheaper and better by than the Sony equivalent.

Yes... It's not 20th century anymore, I can hardly name any consumer-grade electronics where Sony is at the top...

What SONY need to do is completely change there direction.

First thing SONY needs to do is to build a world class top notch Digital Distribution Network for its own and other media, like itunes. Have it the DD platform for movies, music and games as well as apps for a variety of products ranging from computers to TVs to gaming consoles. Partnering with Google to create a super android platfrom to connect with the millions of smart phones is a good idea.

Then completely reverse it trend and become the Budget Electronics company when it comes to products like TV's. Try and make the cheapest LCD/LED TV's and 3DTV's for the masses and if it can reach prices around what those generic brands like soniq etc then they can use there brand power to capitalize and dominate that sector then aiming for the high market currently dominated by Samsung. If you want a new tv on a budget and you go into the store and look at the TV's that are cheap, and you see rip off brands you never heard off then you see SONY with there equally priced TV, you would buy the SONY one over the other brands any day.

With there computer business, they need to make make computers that is a Hybrid between a Macbook Air and a Ipad, so basically a mac book Air with the screen able to flip around to work as a tablet, asus have done something like this but if SONY can bring that out before apple and combine with the above DD service then they could gain big market share of the tablet/laptop industry.

And then you have gaming, best thing to do is to remain disk base, go more powerful then the Wii U and focus entirely on delivering the best online and DD platform around but at a cheap price to that of the PS3 launch.

But basically stop going for the high end, use brand to conquer the budget end and build a awesome digital distribution platform people would want over itunes, maybe with the help of google.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

I can't name one.

Portable Music Players, and headphones (if you exlude designer headphones etc). Their sound-systems are near the top as well.

There is no dominant electronics brand that is the 'best' at many things nowadays.

That's business suicide.

You don't spend years creating a top end and respected brand, just to dump it and go budget when the times get tough.

The name SONY still sells. Those four letters are worth a lot.

yeah thats what i am saying

that first it used to bring a full-on experience(apple kind) and total new tech(hardware innovation)

now its trying to be safe and trying to be a money aimed company where they don't have a man with vision who they can depend on,and hence they are struggling

just look at how much they have changed since PS3 released

PS3 was a wrong bet at that stage against competitors but it did WOW us,today they just don't do that

I see where you are coming from, but I'd say Sony still 'wow' us more than most electronic firms today.

For being in dodgy economic times, PS Vita, their Augmented Reality tech, their OLED Displays, their new VAIO's, and their new tablets have certainly made an impression.

I think that taking into consideration the past 5 years Sony have had, they're doing ok on the innovation front. I just don't think we'll see the days again where they spend Billions and Billions on crazy new gear.

yeah they are still very innovative and high end but they only wow those people expecting high end stuff

they aren't that much involved with popular culture, involving yourself in pop culture like APPLE does these days gives you that extra income that can make the high end products even better

and they really need to redefine the company's image

SONY is known for quality but as new generations come, that is becoming niche and

there variations in product damages the company name on many level in the digital world where everything needs to be one way

and the company really needs to have a streamline of products not spread wide

i wonder what they are gonna do? I still kind of don't understand why sony is losing money on the tv business. They may not be the number 1 or 2 seller but they are probably the 3rd or 4th highest seller of televisions. I have a panasonic, samsung, and a sony in my house and consider them the top 3 in the TV business. I guess if sony is not is 1st place they don't make money.

Electronics, ESPIECALLY TVs are a razor thin profit margin buisness.

Combine the Yen's past troubles, with Samsung passing them in quality but still being cheaper in price...

Sony's had no choice but to make their margins razor thin and coast on brand name... and various things are causing that razor thin margin to make them dip into the red.

They're fighting to keep that brandname in TVs.

As of yet they haven't slipped into gamecube "screw it, we're just going to sell it for a profit and concede the TV market" and hope we hit something big" mode.

Which might actually be what their failed 3D push was about.  Attempting to make the Wii of TV.
