Forums - Gaming - A documentary that should be watched by all gamers and non-gamers

Playing Columbine

Just watched this documentary about a guy that made Super Columbine Massacre RPG! and I have to say it is a pretty insightful documentary on the way games should be held accountable, issue they should take on, etc... I would suggest anyone that hasn't seen it to watch it. It brings up the issue of blaming actions of others on video games just because they played violent video games, the game being pulled from Slamdance, etc... The documentary interviewed several game designers, gamers, etc and even had a video of Shigeru Miyamoto talking about games triggering other emotions besides happiness.  It even has every gamers favorite person (Jack Thompson) in it. It is on Netflix instant stream right now so check it out if you haven't.

It would be nice to be able to discuss some of these issues or at least bring them to light.  Sad that a topic as interesting as this gets zero to little response/discussion while the community focuses on far less trivial topics.   If anyone cares to respond or talk about these issues that gaming has to deal with then please do so.  I would be very happy to have an actual intelligent conversation on this site again.

Here is the link to the site where you can download this game for free.  I haven't even tried it out yet myself yet.  However, I am sure I'll learn more about the entire incident while playing the game than I did from the controlled "media".

While it isn't the best video game documentary probably out there it does cover a very wide range of topics besides the controversy of the Columbine game.  The topics it covers are pretty interesting such as new entertainment mediums that come under fire from the older generations that don't understand them (movies, rock and roll, video games).  Luckily, the USA has declared that video games are an art form so that should lead to less censorship.  Basically, people were upset that someone even tried to make a video game based off the Columbine massacres even though there are plenty of documentaries showing far gruesome pictures and films about the incident.  Then it showed people that learned more about the massacre by playing this low res/quality sprite game than they did from the media.  If I can just shed the light on this documentary to a few gamers I would be happy.

Comment edited in order to avoid prosecution >:D

I'm directly opposed to anything that will enlighten me or educate me about anything but I do love watching things about video games. I'll watch it. I've seen this thread floating around the forums, forgotten and unloved for a couple of days now. I guess every thread deserves a little love.

You'll love the documentary based purely on all the old school video games shown throughout the documentary.  So even if you zone out on the people babbling about video games, you will have all the pretty old school video game footage to mesmerize over.
