in other words Pokemon "grey" will be a 3DS game with the ability to trade with the DS games.

Grey is to obvious. I wouldn't be suprised if it is another spin off title to be honest. Maybe like Mystery Dungeon which showed up on the DS and GBA back in the day. A title that has properties on 3DS and is playable on DS is possible as well but I think releasing one version on DS and the other on 3DS would bring in much larger profits, and Nintendo is all about profits!
