What is the greatest RPG on Earth? This question is easy. There's no real competition, and anyone who really knows RPGs will understand

The greatest RPG on this planet, a game that will likely never be beaten, as the development studio that created it is now defunct, is Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Fantastically gripping story, gameplay that requires you to think, challenging battles, amazing choice with creating your character, it is leagues better than all others.

It's the second highest RPG on both Metacritic and Game Rankings barely trumped by Bioshock(?) and KOTOR respectively). I can't believe only one other person has mentioned it on this thread (I agree with Legend11, stop the presses!).

Bioware really know their RPGs

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

What about if I enjoy some JRPGs, but found Chrono Trigger bland and boring? vv

I will try not to bring hate into a RPG love thread. I think you may like the anti Chrono Trigger games. Do you like FF VIII, FF XII, Legend of Legaia, Chrono Cross?

As far as JRPGs go, I prefer either deep, challenging dungeon-crawlers like the Shin Megami Tensei games or DQ8, or something that requires some twitch skill, like the Tales series, Legend of Dragoon, or Shadow Hearts. My only point was that people can like JRPGs without liking CT. =P

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Legend of Dragoon was great.

I actually think Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrials edges Terranigma out pretty easily and trounces Chrono Trigger.. It was never released in America you know though..

Uhhhm???  I played Lufia II Rise of the Sinistrials on my Snes.  So it had to be released in the USA.  I never finished that game.  I got totally engulfed in the random dungeon simulator.  Spent hours in that thing.  99 floors, loose all exp, items, equipment, everything when you go on.  Can't save at any time.  It was quite a challenge.

 Fun game, too.

Terranigma was never released in America.

Tactics Ogre and Ogre Battle as a series is pathetically underrated. Oh, and I HATE Tales of the Abyss. That game was absolute proof that a good combat system can't carry shitty characters and plot on its back.

Tales of Symphonia > Tales of Phantasia > all other Tales by a mile.
