I've heard the word buzzing about this thread that the only reason the PS3 is selling well on amazon and such is because the Wii is out of stock. If true, where does that leave Microsoft?
the wii is constantly out of stock on amazon, it hasn;t affected sales for most of the year

$400 =/= $250 replacement

THe PS2 is what gets bought when people can't find a Wii.

many wii owners probably already have PS2s.

I think when people can't find a wii, they wait, although this is less likely around christmas

You'd be surprised. Either way people aren't going to spend $150 dollars more on a second choice.

15 Reasons why ps3 should be worried about its future :

1. Cheaper blue ray player than ps3 will be out soon

2. Cheaper combo player - bluray/hd dvd - will be out soon

3. VOD will be much accessible with the bandwidth increase, kicking out all these hd players

4. PS3 live is too far behind X360 one

5. PS3 has already cut its price twice in a year - think about the first ps3 fans who have bought it at full price... - When ps3 will cut its price again, Wii is gonna strike back this time

6. Former casual ps2 gamers is/will be moving to wii platform - and there are a lot

7. PS3 hardware has no future - no future reuse...

8. PS3 marketing strategy is a disaster

9. PS3 hardware linup is a disaster too : look at all those SKUs, look at that controller with sisaxis, no ps2 retrocompatibility for certain SKU,  etc.

10. PS3's sold lesser game than its concurrent : meaning less profit

11. PS3's games are all delayed : it's a fact

12. PS3's supposed blockbusters which have deceived : lair, heavenly sword, uncharted - look at the numbers

13. PS3 has exclusives : good for them cause Wii and X360 have too

14. Agressive concurrents : nintendo and microsoft....

15. PS2's dying, and with it its marketing/public image. PS3 will have to forge its own one.

number 2 on your list is completely false lg super blu is way more expensive then the ps3 and will never be cheaper even if it drops the price  sony has shown their not afraid to drop thee price either.

"I'm not even sure it's a good indicator of what's selling on amazon"

Well, it's a nice indication of trends. If a console is a top-selling item for a longer time ( while competitive consoles are not out of stock of course) , you can expect to see US sales-numbers following the same trend.

For example, the difference between xbox360 and ps3 sales is a lot smaller now, you could see something like that coming a week ago at amazon.

Actually no you can't. Your knew, so i'll cut you a break, but if you look back Amazon's top sellers have had absolutly no bearing whatsoever on US sales as a whole. There have been plenty of times PS3's and 360's have risen to the tops of the Amazon charts and it's had absolutley no effect at all on the US numbers total.

Hence why no one thinks Amazon is a good indicator of anything.

Often times it actually trended AGAINST what amazon was showing.

Much of the time the PS3 is above the 360 on amazon, the sales have not really been reflecting that

Yeah.  That's what i meant, many times PS3 would shoot above 360, and people would expect the PS3 to be ahead, but often times in the past it wouldn't be, and it's total number sold wouldn't be effected at all.  Amazon isn't a good sample of the market as a whole.  No game online retailer is an even close to reliable source as they all represent a very niche small part of a buying audience, and each site represents a different niche audience in some cases.
