It's biologically built into them, as a previous poster said, for when their mothers carry them as kittens. Yes, it's a little mean if people do it just for fun, but on a more practical side of things, using a clip of some sort would make a vet's job a million times easier sometimes. And vets are almost always doing what's best for the cat, so how is THAT abusive?
