Technically not. Though I don't really care.
All I know is that when I discovered classic game emulators in the early 00's (around the same time Napster first came out) I was in heaven lol.
But yeah, it absolutely is piracy, so be careful with that stuff.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
TadpoleJackson said: It depends. The PS3, and Wii have emulators that allow them to play games from past systems. You can also use an emulator on the PC to play a game right off the disc. Say Dolphin for the PC, a great Wii emulator, you can put a Wii disc in the PC and play it. I wouldn't consider these piracy. On the other hand though if you were to download an emulator which is perfectly legal, and then were to download a ROM, then yes, I do believe that is considered piracy.
PS3 and Wii are owned by their respective creators and they have the right to use it for their advantage
cloud1161 said: its only piracy if you do not own the actual game which pretty much defeats the purpose of running an emulator anyway. i use emulators for my old sega and nes games to play on my pc or psp. its much more convenient than having to hook up those old systems. however, i do still enjoy hooking them up once in a while to play some old style gaming.
if you own the system and the software and then play it on a different software, then it won't be piracy.
otherwise it is

Are you going to tell me your point or are you going to make me guess?

they have right to sell what they invented and profit from it.
Sony can use PS3 to sell PS1,PS2,PSP games
same for ninty
zarx said: Emulation it's self is a legal grey area I havn't heard of anyone actually getting into trouble for an emulator by it's self. That is not to say it is legal but unless you try to sell the emulator there is nothing anyone can legally do to stop it. How people get the games to play on the emulators is another matter, many of the oldest games (pre SNES) were made by companies that no longer exist etc so once again there is a legal grey area around those games there is next to no chance of of anyone caring even if it is not strictly legal, and in some countries as long as you own a copy of the origonal game (or other peice of content like movies or music) you are allowed to create a copy for your own use so that would be legal depending on where you live, think about it like riping a CD or DVD for your own use. For disc bassed systems like the PS2 etc it is possible to use a legit copy of the game just like a real console.
I agree with this. I used to download and play SNES/NES/Gameboy games on my pc in the mid-to-late 90s. I recall the law at the time as being that these games could be downloaded and played but MUST be deleted after 24 hrs. A pretty stupid law if you ask me and of course neither me nor my friends ever did delete the games. Point is, it wasnt technically illegal to download it then but i suspect it would be now. Authorities seem to be cracking down on that much more nowdays and i doubt it would be easy to download games other than via torrents.
