Forums - Sales - Atelier Series’ Alchemist of Arland Trilogy Exceeds 400,000 Copies

Atelier Meruru director, Yoshito Okamura, has a new post up on the Gust blog, reporting that the Alchemist of Arland trilogy of games — consisting of Atelier Rorona, Totori and Meruru — has shipped 400,000 units, including their “Best” versions.

As we reported last week, the Alchemist of Arland trilogy’s debut sales have been on the rise with each successive game. Okamura is thankful for this. He points out that in the case of  Atelier Rorona, the game had a very hard completion rate, as a result of which Gust received a lot of fair criticism from fans. Okamura jokes he was half-crying as he read criticism and compliment mails alike.

Okamura’s been at Gust for about 10 years. Ever since the PlayStation 2 era, he’s tried to create interesting games, although sales of these [PS2] titles were consistently not good. His philosophy, faced with this, is to create games that grabs the player’s attention and gets them to pick it up. Once they get their hands on it, they think, “This is interesting!”

This strategy, Okamura feels, is the best for a small company like Gust, so they’ll continue to publish games in this manner. With everyone’s support, he says, they’ll put those feelings into their next project. Finally, Okamoto closes out his post by hinting at more Atelier news to come this month.

Definitely well deserved. I started playing my first Atelier game "Atelier Rorona" about a week ago. I'm very close to the Platinum and I must say that I have enjoyed this game more then a lot of games this generation.

I played Atelier Rorona. I thought it was a awful game. 2/10 in my opinion.

I'm just going to point out that Gust is made up of 15 developers and they've been selling more games than ever this generation. It also helps that they're using Sony's free PhyreEngine, which means that they can rake in even more of those profits. Gust is ballin' and I'm willing to bet that them, along with another bunch of up and rising Japanese developer and publishers, will be the future leaders of that part of the industry.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

It's definitely not a game for everyone. It will only aim for a specific audience and I happened to fall into it. Personally I would give it a solid 9/10

The battle system is fine, but the game is a little repetitive and nothing more than fetch quests 7/10

Waiting for Atelier Totori The Adventurer of arland

Almost all  JRPG are repetitive. LOL

Guys, I can't play Final Fantasy 13, I keep trying and I'm three hours in and I have no fucking clue what I'm doing. All I'm doing is going to the attack icon, pick the enemy and then slash them with my sword and then I win. I keep on winning and then all of a sudden an OMFG big alien robot dog ship comes and attacks me and I die within the first sequence. Honestly, I think the game kinda sucks, I'm not the biggest JRPG guy around, but I can play Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovered pretty damn well.

I've got Atelier: Alchemist of Arland, it's easy to understand and fun to play, but it's no Final Fantasy in terms of production values. I just feel like I'm missing out on something, was actually expecting it to be a great introduction into the series (like MGS4, Yakuza 3 and Dance Dance Revolution UK). I also just bought Resonance of Fate and I liked the opening CGI video, neat stuff, hopefully it'll be fun because I'm not to keen on moving on to Mini Ninjas and Splatterhouse.
