Forums - Gaming - App Store crosses 15 billion downloads

A press release from Apple reveals that iOS users have downloaded 15 billion apps, and are now downloading software at a rate of 1 billion units per month. Apple's payout to developers is over $2.5 billion dollars, and crunching the numbers, that means that the average selling price of an iOS app is $0.24. That means the App Store is currently taking revenues of roughly $240 million per month, or $2.88 billion per year, and growth is still strong.

GigaOm notes that Android market is moving apps at a rate of 500,000 per month, for 4.5 billion total downloads so far. Alas, no money numbers were attached to that figure, nor does it account for Android apps sold through other storefronts.

Other figures from the press release:

- 425,000 available apps on the App Store

- 100,000 apps designed for iPad

- 200 million iOS users worldwide

There's still no clear data on what proportion of these app sales or revenues are games, but Nielsen did recently publish the results of a survey where they found that the average iPhone user plays games for 14.7 hours a month on their phone, while Android owners play for 9.3 hours, and the smartphone market as a whole averages 7.8 hours.

With apologies to Euphoria. I keep planning to make game threads, but I just end up playing the games instead. What's a guy to do?

That was six months ago, actually. Ars Technica has a nice little graph of total downloads here to give you an idea of the App Store's trajectory:
