It's actually meant to be Jesus' birth. However, even theologists agree it would not have been the exact date, even if Jesus did exist which is scientifically improbable.

 

I prefer BCE and CE dating.

Just turned midnight here in Japan. Too bad I couldn't do anything, because I've been sick the last 2 days :( Oh, well at least I get to go to Kyoto w/my gf in a few days :D

 actually, it's more "count how long it's been since that One Guy was born."

 

And it turns out that the man that set up the calendar that way did it wrong. If he had his calculations right, it'd actually be approximately the year 2011 or 2012 now.

 That was unnecessary and totally irrelevant to the topic.  Seems a tad trollish to me.

@Sqrl: Yeah, Jesus death was on Nisan 14th which generally puts it in the March/April time frame.  There's no way Jesus birth would have been in the winter.  Bethlehem was noted for its harsh winters, and the Scriptures indicate that the sheperds were out in the fields with their sheep around the time Jesus was born.  Doesn't make much sense, does it?
