But, I definately disagree with Halo 3 being game of the year. I think CoD4 should win... Not because it is that much better but because it was so well done for both PS3 and 360. Which means that it was a top notch game for two consoles. If a 360 game is selected for GOTY I think it should be BioShock.

As for Lair... For me it is a toss up between Lair and Vampire Rain or Hour of Victory. None of them deserved my money.

I think the best FPS is Orange Box, the biggest surprise would have to be something else...the Bungie deal wasn't THAT big...but otherwise, I don't see much wrong with their list, it at least makes sense.

Before you go bashing them for loving Halo 3 so much, play the game yourself.  If you haven't played it (leo-j) then I don't get what you're complaining about.  Compared to the other nominees for say, Multiplayer game, I'd still say Halo 3 wins, and I don't even like Halo much.  It has a ton of options, the Forge, 4 player online cooperative mission play, as well as new map downloads and plenty of players.  It just has more stuff than COD4 or TF2 (if that was even a nominee, don't care as that's my personal favorite), it's close with COD4 but I can see why they chose it.

I can see why 360 had best software...it had all the multiplatform games that the PS3 had and then some, and also its multiplats were often released earlier with fewer bugs.  It had a ton of exclusives, and many would say it was a much better year for it than PS3 or Wii.

Lair was the most disappointing game in ages.  That's a fact.

COD4 winning best PS3 game over Uncharted or Ratchet may not go over with everyone, but I can see it being a better game than those two...

ok, joking aside, deciding a GOTY must be pretty rough, I mean what criteria do you use?

Best Graphics? - Well that likely rules out any Wii game from ever getting it :(
Best Replay value? - Well that heavily skews towards FPS's(among other genres) and games like Mass Effect would be boned
Most mainstream sales success? - A lot of people would say this shouldn't even factor in, but shouldn't game of the year be a reflection of the best game in the eyes of the gamers not some site reviewers.....and if a game sells really well, that should at least put it in consideration right?

Don't get me wrong, I don't even own a 360, I've been a PC fps'r for years and don't really find halo anything revolutionary, but if you look at Halo from the position of:

Very good graphics/sound - Sure it's no Bioshock/COD4, but it's nothing to scoff at
Very good replay - fairly obvious on this front
Excellent Sales - Other then Wii Sports and Wii play, which have high sales due(in part) to reasons unrelated to the games themselves, it was the highest seller of the year(haven't look this up, but it must be up there)

Obviously there are loads of other categories, but Halo 3 at least does well(if not leading the pack) in some of the categories, so I don't see it being a huge stretch for it to win GOTY awards.

Halo gets WAY overhyped and overmarketed...but that doesn't make it a bad game, it's quite the contrary. I don't like the style too much, and I find PC offerings far more versatile and fun, but I think a lot of fanboys just immediately shut down Halo because of all the hype it gets.

 are you on crack? the PC mod community dwarfs the forge's abilities. Freak you can mod the thing yourself by putting all HL2 maps in portal's map folder. And Half-Life 2 needing co-op.. WHY? and TF2 destroys Halo 3's gameplay with it's overall style. I'm sorry the Spy could easily kill MC.
