So in case you haven't noticed, the comments in articles section of VGChartz are no longer organised by time, but by the number of upvotes they have minus the number of downvotes they have, in a system quite similar to reddit/dig/lots of other places. Now, as far as I can see, there are two flaws with this system and one advantage.
The flaws are that once a few comments have been uvoted, it can be hard for new comments to get to the front, thus it's hard for them to get upvotes which they need to get to the front. The second is that it tends to bury legitimate, but unpopular opinions.
The advantage of course it that it can bury spam, trolling and similar. It gives us a way to moderate our own community.
Of course, it is up to VGChartz staff to decide wether the advantages outweigh the dissadvantages on the whole, so this thread is not to debate the basic premise of this system.
My suggestion is this. If you are going to have a similar system to Reddit, have it more similar. On Reddit, how high on the page a comment appears is determined by both how long it has been around and by how many upvotes and downvotes it has. This allows new comments to be seen, to get their change to get more upvotes, and then to sink into obscurity if they are not deemed good enough. This removes one of the two big problems associated with this system.
Additionally, just taking into account total upvotes minus total downvotes is not ideal, as explained here - http://www.evanmiller.org/how-not-to-sort-by-average-rating.html
Anyone agree?
