Forums - Gaming - Ugh... The Amy trailer makes me think a focus on graphics detracts from gameplay.

I saw this...

http://gamrtv.vgchartz.com/video/1658/amy-visual-tour-trailer/

Developer goes, "Here is what we are trying to do with the game" or something like that.  I wait to see what the heck the game is about, and all I get are graphic effects?  Fortunately the person in the video said they will go more into the gameplay.  But, shoot, when I see something about "here is what we are trying to do in the game" and all you show is graphics, it is distracting.  So, having bloom effects and other things, TO ME, is less bang for the buck than other things.

Anyone else feel like this also?  I am feeling increasingly that videogames are more and more about anything BUT the gameplay.  The idea is better graphics, or improvements in storytelling, but what about innovativre gameplay?

Well, if I got anything right in my years of gaming (I know I will be bashed because of this pretentious intro) is only natural that during the begining of a new generation graphics are the main focus of atention both for the media and the gamers.
Once a generation arrives to its middle life the focus should shift to gameplay, art design, original concepts, etc.
Of course Wii stood as a huge exception to this rule, but that didn't happened with the HD consoles, to which were applied the "classical" rules.

Now, when there's a generation shift, as in the SNES-SEGA 32x -PSX era, back in 1994/95, it is only natural that the company which is in a hardware "disadvantage" and excels in their use of software, as Nintendo did with their rendering in DCK, Killer Instinct and Super Mario RPG, put the focus on graphics once again, just to show how they are still competent enough for you to stick with them.
Expect this once Wii U is thrown into the market.

But it's titled Visual Tour Trailer.... What did you expect?

A visual walkthrough of the game.  I read it as that, not a tour of the visuals.  And he goes into about what they want to achieve, and it was graphics effects.

In this case, it's understandable. Amy is supposed to be a survival horror PSN title. Downloadable games aren't exactly known for their visuals or presentation--some don't even consider them "real games" the same way they consider retail titles. This trailer is meant to show that even though it's a download-only game, it is still a high quality title. in other works, it's their way of saying: don't dismiss this game outright simply because it's being released on the PSN and not at retail.

Ok, that clarifies something to me.  That sounds like someone would have to know something about the game.  Well, I knew nothing about the game.  I was expecting to learn a bit about it in the first video, and all I saw was graphic effects.

I agree with OP. Its kinda sad that this is the first thing developers mention these days. I feel the same way about battlefield. Amazing lighting and particle effects should be the icing on the cake. Tell me about the meat first, the meat should be gameplay.
