Well, if I got anything right in my years of gaming (I know I will be bashed because of this pretentious intro) is only natural that during the begining of a new generation graphics are the main focus of atention both for the media and the gamers.
Once a generation arrives to its middle life the focus should shift to gameplay, art design, original concepts, etc.
Of course Wii stood as a huge exception to this rule, but that didn't happened with the HD consoles, to which were applied the "classical" rules.
Now, when there's a generation shift, as in the SNES-SEGA 32x -PSX era, back in 1994/95, it is only natural that the company which is in a hardware "disadvantage" and excels in their use of software, as Nintendo did with their rendering in DCK, Killer Instinct and Super Mario RPG, put the focus on graphics once again, just to show how they are still competent enough for you to stick with them.
Expect this once Wii U is thrown into the market.
