Forums - Gaming - Do you, Sony and Microsoft see a future in Motion Control?

ok well lets agree to disagree, im saying nintendo built upon old technology and so there for no one can claim nintendo to be the creator of the d pad and you are saying that nintendo created the modern day d pad with the cross hair shape and so they deserve to be given the honour of creating the modern day d pad, which i completly agree with, but i still stand on the fact that nintendo did not create the first directional thumb based input device, there were predecessors that developed the concept of using the thumb to press directions. If u look at the way a modern day D pad actually works ull be suprised that it still follows the circular concept except you have extruded 'buttons' off this circular shape that your thumb presses instead of a smooth disk. For an example of this circle happening outside of the controller shell just look at the x box d pad, same circle but with the bits extruded for better cross directional gripping edit *Nintendo created a new look to the directional input decive, but underneath it all it was driven by the same concept of the intellivision directional disk. so i agree that the appearance of it on the outside (except for x box) was changed by nintendo and over the years the technology has increased to allow for better d pads. but ultimatly we are still using the same style of pad as the intellivision it just looks different and feels better

Dude, I know what an Intellivison is and how to play it because I own one. I have about 20 games and 2/3 of those games are complete in box. The problem with those inserts is that if you loose them (which happens often) the game becomes completely unplayable. To further reiterate my point, I have Burgertime on the Intellivision and Burgertime on the NES. Guess which one plays better? Guess which one is easier to figure out how to play if all you have is the cart? If you said Intellivision while someone held a gun to your head and demanded the correct answer you'd be brainless right now.

Please just stop trying to make the Intellivision sound better than it is, you're just shaming yourself. The Intellivison is an intresting footnote in VG history and nothing more.

EDIT: Furthermore, when you play most of these Intellivision game you end up using both hands on the "Thumb based NUmberpad" because not all the actions indicated on the insert card are not directional movements. So if you want to jump you might have to hit the 9 key. Half the time I play the games with one thumb poised over each half of the key pad. My dominate thumb usually taking the middle keys. I have to use 2 thumbs not one just to play that "d-pad".

lol your argueing off the point now, its not a matter of what plays better, of course the newer tech will be better, it should be, but the initial arguement is that nintendo only enhanced something that was allready created, they took the exact same design and added a few things to it with better technology, i bet the d pads today own the d pads back on the nes, why? because of better implimentation of the technology so any way, we disagree, so lets leave it at that

Motion Sensing controls have a promising future, because it allows gamers and non-gamers alike to play. Whole families can play at once.

However, where Sony went wrong is the two handed controls. If they can find a way to make more games like High Velocity Bowling then it would be different. (It has one handed controls.)

So we are all agreeing that nintendo, made all these things standard then.

My point was not "Which plays better" it was that Nintendo's version of the D-pad was picked up because it was far superior to other offerings. The tech was in no way copied from either not because it looks different but because it was different. Especially in the case of the Intellivision. Nintendo used thier D-pad stricktly as a means for movement. Intellivison was using it for all inputs which made their entire controller essentially a D-pad. This was not at all practical for video games hence the reason why it failed miserbly. I think you're giving Intellsvision too much credit. They didn't save anything, they didn't start or introduce the d-pad in a way that caught on and they sure has hell didn't have many easy to play fun games that used said d-pad.

Intellevision Fails.

Yep. The future of gaming controllers is still the same, whatever the hell Nintendo wants it to be.

Tell that to the Aftertouch feature in Heavenly Sword. Which works with actual thrown people in addition to arrows, by the way.

Also the soul yanking in Folklore.

And steering in racing games and flying in Warhawk, and theres a bowling game on the PSN that uses it

i think the question about MS using motion control can be answered from this news article. everyone sees how it has opened gaming up to a larger crowd. and there is really know reason that everyone can't do it. wouldn't it be something if Banjo 3 is the game that kicks off the Xbox 360 motion sensing controls? that would be a sure fire way to get it into people's living rooms.

Well thats it, 100% of this site, nno wait 99.999999% of this site is nintendo kingdom.
