Well, they could ally themselves with China. Not like anyone will jump to help you.

Bwa-ha-ha, ally with China? :D

There're greater chances that the moon will fall on the earth rather than Japan will ally with China. I've lived in China for years, dealing with Chinese on constant basis till now. So I'm more or less familiar with the context, Chinese have a big grudge against Japan. Won't happen ever, there're more than 1001 reasons for that. Anyways Chinese tried as well, didn't work out either. Sorry, there's no song on that matter, just google Damansky and Zhalanashkol incidents.

And, please, stop derailing the thread.

Things have changed since 1969. China's keeps on growing more powerful, and Russia's glory dies are long gone. But we shouldn't derail this thread though.

LOL, that's just hypocrite's innocence, the damage already done. I know you have personal grudge against me, yeah, I was rude last time. Deal with that, I'm an ass.

Last time? Have we talked before? And if you're anything like the guy in your avatar, I agree with the bolded!

I wonder how Japanese who consider to 'scrap' reactors see the future of Japanese industry in that case? =)

Hydropower is out of the question, water streams are to weak for commercial use (partly the reason nuclear reactors are built near the shore). Thermal power is a possibility, but given lack of own natural resources this makes Japan dependant of overseas suppliers, and all neraby potential suppliers have unresolved territorial issues with Japan (let alone it'll cost them to build needed infrastructure to transit the fuel). Heothermal, tidal powers... that's just laughable.

The reality is that nuclear power isn't going anywhere from Japan, even it'll cost them millions of lives. And that's not only a problem of building plants protected from possible tsunami and earthquakes (seriously, this should have been done long ago), but proper safety guidlines and management (say, by nationalization of major nuclear power companies).

Actually Japan grew up with hydropower. They can't use more of it because they actually already utilizes all their relevant waterfalls.

Thermal power is the main energy matrix for Japan(with nuclear power a little behind).

if someone were to jump in on a side during a war between china and russia...it would totally be on russias side. china likes to run roughshod over so many of their neighbours.

They're the two security council black sheep. I don't think anyone would help either of them, to be honest.

Yeah, it's true. AFAIK big part of them are pumped-storage power plants though, relatively small and costly. At this point Japanese industry won't survive on hydropower.

Though I wasn't aware that thermal energetics still that big in Japan, was expecting nuclear and thermal power plants capacities  to be somewhere at  50 and 30% respectively of total capacity, which seems to be quite the opposite. They're importing fuel from the Near East I assume? Anyways nuclear energy still the most safe way (in all regards) for Japan to develop it's energetics.

It would depend on context. If it were a Russian far-eastern power-grab, you could probably see Japan and the Koreas lump in to help China. If the Chinese were trying to take the Maritime provinces, things would get more complex, as the Japanese have cause to hate them both, and Japan could just jump in to take the southern Kuril Islands that they've been complaining about since the end of WWII, or try to stop the Chinese who they know have it in for them (anti-Japanese resentment still runs huge in China)
