This is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, just as you remember it, reborn for a new portable system and a new generation of gamers across the globe. If you have never played this classic game, stop reading this review and get out there and buy it. The core essence of Ocarina of Time ages exceptionally well (even in light of sequels that have expanded on it), and it's never looked better. That Nintendo and Grezzo were only willing to adjust and enhance so much (by and large the sound is untouched) is truly admirable and speaks to their respect for the source material and its original developers. There is no doubt in my mind that it was the right choice. Why mess with perfection?

That said, that decision comes with a price, one that will frustrate many of you who have played this game over and over again and are in the market for drastic change. If the graphical boost isn't enough - and let's be honest, we're already seeing some games on the 3DS that look better than this - you're not going to have much else to satisfy your interests. It's clear this game is being released to find a new generation of gamers that are just discovering Nintendo's franchises. The rest of us will have to determine if it's worth re-visiting a Hyrule we've known for nearly 13 years. Rest assured, though, that doing so will not only let you relive a masterpiece, it will let you experience it in the best way possible.

I suppose this is why the Zelda/Bond analogy is ultimately flawed. Games have changed a lot more since 1998 than films have since the '60s. Ocarina, essential and unequalled as it was in its day, shows the signs of its age and could definitely be refined in ways that wouldn't have a negative impact on the heart of the game itself. It's still a great adventure, laden with atmosphere and crammed with content, but it sits uncomfortably between the 2D perfection of A Link to the Past and the more nuanced refinements of its own successors (especially Twilight Princess and, by all appearances, Skyward Sword). As a portable gaming enthusiast, I love being able to play a game of this quality on the go. I just wish as much attention had been paid to the nuts-and-bolts of the game as was lavished on appearances.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is more than just a re-make. Sure, the story is the same, and if you've played it before, everything will feel instantly familiar. But if you fell in love with Ocarina of Time when it originally released, the revamped visuals, new interface, and bonus content will be enough to get you back into the game. Ocarina of Time 3D truly shines on the 3DS, and even though this version is optimized for handhelds, it is definitely the ultimate version of the game. If you have never experienced Ocarina of Time before, this is a great place to jump in. If you've already been through the game several times, get ready to say hello to an old friend made new. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is truly the first "must-have" game for the 3DS.

In short, it's given me a new perspective on a classic that I had (foolishly) written off. It's not quite enough to sell me on owning a Nintendo 3DS; but if you've already taken the plunge, Ocarina of Time 3D is pretty much the best 3DS game on the market right now. I can't promise that it'll give you a new perspective on the series as it did for me, but I can promise that it's still one fine adventure.
