Forums - Nintendo - Wii U won't support DVD or Blu-Ray playback... your thoughts?

It's a bad idea to watch DVDs on your console anyway. Use your DVD player/Blue-Ray player for that!

Why is it a bad idea?  Is it really a dumb thing that I just have a PS3 to play games, DVD's, Blueray, music, photos, and browse the web?  I think the biggest mistake nintendo keeps making comes down to their choice of media storage.  First cartridges killed the N64, small disks limited the Gamecube, and the only reason the Wii was mostly uneffected is it lacked any power what so ever.

This time the Wii U won't have limited data storage, but it won't be able to be sold as a multimedia device.  In many ways 360, and especially PS3 can hold that over the Wii U's head as one way it is no better than the current consoles.

It's a bad idea for customers because it significantly reduces the lifespan of your console and it's a bad idea for Nintendo because they would lose money on it and never see it back and because they will be basically competing with themselves that way.

Didn't read the article but from what I see in the OP is Nintendo saying that the reason is due to the disc used?

I remember Wii not having playback for DVD also but that was just due to Nintendo being cheap because a quick soft mod enabled DVD playback on mine and I am sure the same will enable at least DVD playback on the Wii U.

If the system serves as a game machine, it is a nice, but unessential feature to have.  If the feature had no costs, I am sure Nintendo would look to add it.  However, there are costs to make it play DVDs and Blu-Ray and Nintendo decided not to do this.

i use my computer all the time for movies and tv shows so i don't care if does not have these things in it. some people might not want it so why force them to pay extra for it?

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Well I don't have a dvd player I just use my X360 for it and before that my PS2..

Meh, it's not the end of the world. By now, everybody in the free world has a DVD player, so that's not an issue. As for Blu Ray, it's a Sony made device which is one of Nintendo's prime competitors, so I'm not too surprised. Blu Ray still has a ways to go before it becomes widely accepted anyway.

So this is why Ubisoft said that the Wii U is not a next-gen console. LOL!

Can't really say I care.

Besides, everyone should have expected this. Nintendo is not trying to push blu-ray like Sony is. Nor are they really trying to compete with multi-media features against Sony like MS is.

They have little reason to want to add that support. Blu-ray playback will be one of the least important features for consoles next gen.

If 3DTVgains popularity your assumption could end up being way off.

Blurays won't be as expensive, not to mention you can grab one for $1.50 at Redbox right now.

Netflix doesn't stream 3D nor is it's HD the same overall quality as that found on a BD disc.

I am sure BD will continue to have its uses within the next 3-5 years easy.

Sure but playing Blu-ray or DVD movies is really not a good idea on consoles because it just adds unecessary wear and tear on the consoles laser lens.  Not to mention that a standalone DVD/Blu-ray player uses a lot less energy then a video game console.

I have a question , surely old technology like DVD being dirt cheap would not cost any more than an alternative since Nintendo would have to buy/ licence the new media and associated codec, so I would assume it is more about DVD being seen as outdated and Blu-Ray being seem as slow (even though it would be faster than the PS3's player) and expensive .

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

This better make the damn thing cheap..

wiiU scream for dvd or blu ray, imagine watching a movie but you need to go to the crapper you just bring the controller with you and enjoy, this is very stupid IMO

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
