In the article he mentions the patents involved. Sounds like Nintendo is being cheap as always.

It's a total shame. A missed opportunity. If Nintendo is going to fully sell people on the console to controller screen streaming, this would have been a super cool gimmick to add to the whole premise. The ability to stream your DVD movies to the control screen on the moments that (as Nintendo themselves demonstrated) someone in your family wants to do/see something else.
Nintendo, always finding a way to gimp their own innovative ideas.

They aren't doing it to be cheap. They are doing it because everyone on earth by now has a standalone DVD/Blu-Ray player. Why put somthing into your console that nobody will use? Nintendo initially planned to put a DVD player into the Wii, but decided against it for the same reason, saturation. How is that cheap?

Oh I forgot, they have to pay royalties to Sony. Why fund your biggest competitor?

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?

You are the same guy that made one of the first posts in this thread, correct?

"They are giving away marketshare by not including it. Sounds like a stupid move."

Ok, I think it's a stupid move, and they are sort-of giving up marketshare, but I can understand why they did it, and respect their decision, just that they could have made a better decision given that the other guy said it's really cheap.

Let me see here... I've got like 5 different computers, and all of them can play DVDs... Why the fuck would I want another device for dvds? Seriously my computer hooks up to my HD tv just fine with and HDMI cable with no problems what so ever.

I understand why it could annoy SOME people, but let's be honest. We can all play DVD's or Blu-Rays on other things anyway. Sure, it's annoying. But it isn't the END OF TEH WORLDZ!!!

And who knows. Maybe it'll have Netflix or something anyway. We know it supports high-level Flash Player so youtube etc. are in. They'll be ways around it

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

interesting that Netflix doesn't steam 3D though.

I have somewhat assumed that the Wii U controller will be capable of displaying glassless 3D as long as the console is not displaying anything on the tv screen. (you know, render both screens to the Umote to create the 3DS effect...)

but with no ability to stream 3D movies maybe not after all.

netflix does not, but others have started so it means the tech is there. Netflix probably does not see the value yet as 3d tvs are not that widespread just yet.

So there is hope yet. But I do not if the wii U screen is capable of 3d display.

Who cares. Bluray players are cheap enough nowadays that anyone that wanted one should've already bought one. It's not like not including it in your console will make people shy away from it. As for DVD players, well, let's not go there. You basically get 2 for free with a carton of milk nowadays.

It's a bad idea to watch DVDs on your console anyway. Use your DVD player/Blue-Ray player for that!

Why is it a bad idea?  Is it really a dumb thing that I just have a PS3 to play games, DVD's, Blueray, music, photos, and browse the web?  I think the biggest mistake nintendo keeps making comes down to their choice of media storage.  First cartridges killed the N64, small disks limited the Gamecube, and the only reason the Wii was mostly uneffected is it lacked any power what so ever.

This time the Wii U won't have limited data storage, but it won't be able to be sold as a multimedia device.  In many ways 360, and especially PS3 can hold that over the Wii U's head as one way it is no better than the current consoles.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

Honestly I don't care, and if it makes the console cheaper to us (not Nintendo, US) then I'm all for it.

Hey that is encouraging, sweet.

Maybe Netfix will launch 3D streaming to coincide with the 3D capable Umote launch, one can hope.

I've heard nothing about Umote 3D to be clear, just seems like they are leapfrogging the need for HD tvs by packaging thier new console with a built in HD screen, why not do the same for 3D.

At least for me, not problem. Don't see a lot of movies anyway.
