Forums - Nintendo - Maybe Metroid *isn't* on hiatus?

Remember a while back when Nintendo said Metroid might go on break for a while due to lacklustre sales?

Well, now we have this

http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=160744

"I can't give you any details now, but I'm sure there will be a new Metroid release making use of the new controller, not just to control Samus and her ship but also to give the player a new source of information. Maybe the player is looking at the screen but has the information that they need to defeat the enemy in their hands. You could look through the screen and scan your enemy and find where it's weakspot is." - Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi

Though this may just be speculation. Who's to say?

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I love my Metroid, so I sure hope that we see one on the Wii U. It doesn't have to be soon though. The franchise needs a reboot after Other M.

I'm a bit conflicted on how I want the game to play though. I love the IR pointer on the Wii Remote. That should be used for aiming in a first or third person shooter. But the new controller opens up so many new possibilities...

This is exactly what I think. The IR pointer is perfect for first person Metroid games while the new controller can be used very well in an old school 2D metroid.

I would be happy if Metroid II: Return of Samus just got a Zero Mission style re-release, but that would probably better suited to 3DS. I can certainly imagine many cool uses for the Wii U tablet in a Metroid game, if anything just to finally have that sprawling 3D map display in hand, as well as the using the cameras/motion controls for visors would be super cool.

LISTEN TO THE FIRST WORLD PODCAST REAL GAMERS, REAL AWESOME

So augmented reality implementation of the scan visor, where you hold the controller up and the scan info of what you are pointing at is shown on the controller screen? Sounds cool like a cool way in which the could implement the controller but I get the feeling that this might be what he was talking about as in how he would use the Wii U in a metroid game, poor translations can often change context.

Usig the Wii U controller on 2D metroid kinda nullifies the scanning idea, unless you go other M's way.

I was thinking, would a hybrid control scheme be feasible? It sounds good but kinda contrieved.

amusing that we should hear this from someone who's never touched the Metroid series (Eguchi is probably best known as the director of Animal Crossing). The statement sounds more like speculation (or wishful thinking) than actually admitting that there is a new Metroid in the works. The context of this came from Eguchi's Wii U demo called Battle Mii in which Samus' ship was used. It could possibly be an homage on his part or a hint.

If this is true I could see some cool ideas for the controller, such as using it as a scanner or having it display the map.I'm sure Sakamoto and his boys could think of more than a few things

Great news! The new controller could work for a new 2d metroid, we could play on the big tv while having the map and items on the controller, a visor kind of camera use for the controller could be amazing...

Make it 2.5D, Nintendo! Item management and a larger map would be wonderful on the controller screen.

I think a hiatus is best for the series for now. Nintendo spams certain franchises while others languish or are forgotten--like StarFox (no NEW game since the DS), F-Zero, and many other long-forgotten classics like StarTropics and the Ice Climbers. Their constant use of Mario in everything damn near killed variety on the Wii and DS, and they have yet to deliver Last Story or Xenoblade outside Japan.

I would like to see the franchise continue--but not for a while, and only if they ERASE Metroid: Other M from the series' continuity since the "Samus" in that game is clearly not the strong heroine we all knew and loved from every other game with "Metroid" in the title.
