Hey, thanks for all your input. I can easily put aside enough for the system and a game or two by the end of the year. The thing is I'll also need a TV and I'm not sure whether I'll go for a HDTV or just a normal once, hence the wide gap between the earliest and latest I would get it.
But good advice, I think I'll aim to get it around Christmas. Thanks!

no get a ps3 anytime before 2012 ends if we dont die the ps3 will be the ps2 of the next generation it will keep selling great and games will be comming out on it yes it wont look as tight as the 720 or ps4 but when that time comes around it will be around $199 which would be perfect and you got a great library to go on i will buy a ps4 at launch and a wii u dont know about 720 yet 360 dissapointed me ill see which console looks the best at launch but dont kidd yourself your buying the ps3 in its peak of gaming xbox's was 2006-2009 playstation will be 2009-2014 and will slow down after a year of next gen gaming but get it and if ps4 ends up being backwards compatible to ps3 then you got yourself free games and u can trade your ps3 in if we get a $599 doller situation again :)

@TV; That depends.. you could go with a 20" HDTV for 200 Bucks, but i doubt it'll be enough for you. I suggest to either use your PC Monitor (if he has HDCP and HDMI), and put ya PS3 on that thang, and save a little money every month to get a bigger one a half year later.

But if you dont mind a lower resolution, you could stick to your old TV, too. I highly recommend a HDTV, but i've played with an old one for a long time back then, and it didnt kill the fun at all, only thing is then of course, that it isnt as good looking. (though the loss is more then bearable, imo., cuz in the end its just an upgrade of the resolution.)

goddamnit buy a PS3...you even can buy a PS3 in 2040 and games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted or Little Big Planet will be still fun to play!

+ this and next year you get a full bunch of great fukkin games so its definatly not too late...its more like the perfect time to get a PS3 cause its now not that pricey and got plenty of games!

You should get one after they drop the price of it this fall.

And the PSVita integration will give the PS3 more lifetime... great games are coming yet.

Do you like Nintendo 1st party games? How do they compare to you vs SONY 1st party games? That will be the major difference in between a possible Wii U purchase vs a PS3 purchase in the end as I don't see the PS4 coming anytime soon. Oh and do you have a 3DTV? If you are into 3D gaming or movies, then PS3 actually has support on those.

It's absolutely safe to get one at the end of 2011. You'll probably have 2 years of fun with the system before the new one comes out.
