Forums - Nintendo - 3DS "doomed" planning thread

oh, quick side note. while i welcome any feedback from anyone i am mostly interested in the sites maelstrom (sp?) followers. they have a clairvoyance for what the mass market likes that i could never dream of. for instance - i thought mario galaxy 2 was going to drive wii hardware sales but then when that didn't happen i was informed after the fact why that clearly wasn't going to be the case.

i just want to clearly know what to expect going forward so that i'm not surprised down the road. that's why i'm curious as to if this software counts as they kind of software that will drive 3DS sales or not.

Though i don't agree with their ideas, the Malstromites would say that the only game on that list worth a damn would be Mario Kart and *maybe* StarFox. Everything else they would call developer masturbation or vanity projects, and these people have already declared that Super Mario 3D will bomb

first off - lulz.

second off - is there a particular thread where that was discussed?  i don't remember seeing it.

3DS and PS Vita are not doomed. They will just sell lower than their predecessors.

No particular thread, you just have to know who is aligned that way and pay attention to what they say, and also what Malstrom has said in general in the past. Mario Kart is a mass market staple that you can't really screw up, and he has praised Super Mario Kart and Kart DS in the past, which (given the return of coins) Kart 3D looks like, so there's that. 3d Zelda is niche, 3d Mario is niche (and in this case they refuse to acknowledge any efforts to make 3d mario more like 2d mario, which is what Mario 3ds seems to be doing), Kid Icarus they'd say is all flash no substance, Luigi's Mansion was a GameCube launch title, so a sequel to it can only be bad for a platform that wants to do something more than GameCube did

Malstrom might approve of Smash Bros, i'm not certain, as i haven't subjected myself to reading him at all lately, i get enough negativity in my life thank you.

I would say that once you include the other known 3rd party games in that list that if 3DS is not selling at expected levels this holiday (taking into account its $250) then yes you have legitimacy to say 3DS is doomed in the sense it isn't hitting the expectations laid out for it based on the DS line.

gotcha, i don't read past the OP a lot of times so i've probably just missed those posts.  i certainly don't read maelstrom directly.

btw, the zelda gif in your sig is cool but i think you should get one with the spider cause that thing is really pretty.  i really love the way the zelda universe is protrayed there, much cooler than SS imo.

I find this hilarious.

It doesn't matter how well the 3DS does this holiday. We can still say it's doomed. All it has to do is fail to reach one goal. Outsells the DS? It's doomed because it didn't outsell the iPod. Outsell the iPod? It's doomed because its biggest game didn't outsell Angry Birds. We've got this whole "doom' thing down to a science!! I'm just waiting for the green light to call the Wii U doomed. I want to give it at least a couple more days--or do you think I'm being too generous?

You are too late on that.  I am sure plenty of "hardcore" gamers are calling the Wii U doomed already.  These gamers have a vast gaming experience and have been playing since PS1 days.  That alone trumps my humble Atari 2600 beginnings.  Thus, I will be forever labeled as a "casual" gamer.

Given 3DS's terrible sales and lack of software at the moment, I'd guess all those games should help to an extent (most of them wouldn't at all for, say, the Wii), but Mario Kart 3DS is the only one that should actually make the 3DS go through the charts.
Even if they all fail and 3DS remains dead during the holidays, it's still premature to call it doomed since it still has several important games (NSMB, Pokemon...) that haven't yet launched and will likely boost hardware. On top of that, the console will still probably be $250, which, judging by its sales, is deemed too high by consumers. You'll probably have to wait till the price drops somewhat to see if it's doomed as well.
Long story short, it's gonna be years before any doom-calling is reasonable for the 3DS, even if the doom seems apparent earlier.
Also, why do you want to doom the 3DS anyway? Being so blunt about dooming consoles you don't like is just not nice, ;(.
