Tretton works for SCEA - I've spoken to people at SCEA before and they don't have access to global numbers, but I don't really see an issue with either statement. PS3 was up year to date in the USA. June 2010 sales weren't super strong - average was 60k I believe and weighted more towards the end of the month.
If I see him tommorow, I'll ask him for you though.
Edit: He probably has some NPD figures for May - thats likely what he was talking about.

I'm sure he has access to more complete numbers than VGChartz, but here's the numbers this site has for the last week. Maybe he's talking about this week that JUST ended (may29- june5th).

I agree with @TheSource... May NPD numbers here.
If true that give us something between 190k and 200k for PS3.

.. let alone the trolls on this site. O: ..
@topic: i didnt look for the numbers now, but isnt PS3 doing better than last year? Other than that, who cares, unless tretton isnt totally lying.

the site is cool, what i cant get is why everyone around here goes into pure denial as soon as numbers from other more credible sources come in. its like vgchartz are trying to be the gods of game sales and they have some sort of aline technology to get sales that others cant. seriously, when your wrong, your wrong. just fix it up and get on with it.

Trust me it's much better than 2 years ago.
2 years ago it was ban risking to even suggest some game is overtracked.
