Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Updated Sales Stats and How It Defies Normal Generation Lifeline

A few stats before we head into E3

Today we announced that by extending the capabilities of the Xbox platform with Kinect and Xbox LIVE, Microsoft has “changed the tail” of the typical console lifecycle, showing dramatic gains in the fifth and sixth years of this generation. (see chart above)

In addition, we’ve released the following data points:

  • Microsoft has now sold 55 million Xbox 360 consoles across 38 countries and sales are accelerating.
  • Xbox 360 maintains its lead in the U.S. as the top selling console in 2011, and ten of the past eleven months.
  • In the first four months of 2011, Xbox 360 has seen a 29 percent year over year increase in sales, which is more than triple the growth of PlayStation 3 and the largest growth of any console on the market.
  • There are now nearly 35 million active Xbox LIVE members worldwide spending an average of almost 60 hours a month on the service.
  • Cumulatively Xbox LIVE members are now logging 2.1 billion entertainment hours a month.

from where u got this ??

What a bunch of nonsense. Expending the capabilities of the Xbox platform, Kinect and Xbox Live aren't the reasons why the typical console lifecycle was defied.

The reason why I am saying this is because it's likely that the PS3 will show a similar sales line once it's done with its sixth year and Sony's console has none of the three things above. Actually, the PS3 removed capabilites (like OtherOS and PS2 BC), had fall its motion controller on the face and PSN... well, I don't want to go there.

So it's two other factors that are at work here and both apply to the 360 and PS3.

This is NPD data, not worldwide.  In the US the PS3 has already had it's max selling year and is flat/declining.

Even worldwide it is down YoY and unless they play some big trump card other than a price cut at E3, I think MS is going to runaway with sales again this year while the PS3 stays flat or drops some more YoY.

Why three thread about the same thing? Even the same graphic.

Nope. PS3 is up in US... this year can be the best PS3 year in US.

yeah ps3 is doing the same thing. Its because of online and motion controls.

Assuming it gets a price cut, yes. That's how Sony always stimulated PS3 sales.

It is UP in US without pricecut.

MS says alot of things but the generation  itself hasn't been normal with significant mid-generation changes like kinect and also that they only talk about US and not the world

You don't have to tell me which data this is, it's written on top of the graph. According to the stats below the graph, the PS3 is up yoy in the USA by roughly 9 % (if my calculation is correct, but in any case the PS3 has shown growth contrary to what you claim).

A PS3 price cut is pretty much guaranteed to happen this year, so I don't see how the PS3 could end this year at less than four million. It's probable that it will reach five million or more and thus showing a similar trend as the 360 in its year six.

That stat is puzzling...

VGChartz data shows the PS3 down 12% YoY so far in America (obviously not just the US, but closest I have to compare with).

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 03rd Jan 2010 to 29th May 2010:
