Forums - Gaming - Sony: "No clear competitor to NGP" Nintendo 3DS an "updated DS

Teo said:

I don't care much for handhelds but the Nintendo fans need to realize how ridiculous they sound trying to pretend the 3DS is so not an updated DS. The NGP looks like an updated PSP by design, but the touch screen and the back grip thing definetely gives it enough credit to stand on its own much like the jump from gameboy advance/SP to the DS.

Which just brings up the question, is the NGP just a one screen DSi XL with crazy uber graphics? I leave it up to you :)

What? Both consoles look almost exactly the same as their previous models, but having a touchscreen distinguishes it from an IPhone and DS?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

People seem to get deaf? Who are you trying to kid? Iwata's speeches explaining his stance on smartphone games caused such an immense uproar on the internet that it's unbelievable.

And people are criticizing Sony here because they used the exact same comments last generation and it shows that getting cocky is something they can't seem to get over, which is something of a major problem since it caused their crash this generation.

Nintendo actually deserves less hate for something like this because it's the first time in recent history that they were even remotely offensive. They've actually said plenty of good stuff about their competitors here and there.

Marketing doesn't have to involve trash-talking competitors, you know.

how was what was said trash talk?

the sony rep said that ( in simple terms ) the ngp is better did you expect him to say otherwise?

regardless of what you believe it is a common practice for companies to downplay their opponents' offerings and hype their own ( how else would they raise awareness for their product and gain interest? )... the same happens for example in political campaigns

He also said that the 3DS is an updated DS, remember? That is trash talk, or light trash talk, at least.

And, while I am well aware that it's common practice in business, with all of us being normal human consumers, I think it's quite reasonable for us to look down upon arrogance and downplaying the competition, if only because the consensus is that it's stupid and leads Sony nowhere.

i do... and thats what you call downplaying the opponent

and all the stuff he said about no competitors and the things added are hyping the product he represents

and all of that is simply marketing

why are you so offended anyway? if you don't agree with what was said then just disregard it like for example  if i said pigs fly you would disregard that

btw its hardly a stupid tactic

When will they learn that they should be a bit humble in regards to these things. Also everything in essence is a competitor to the other. As they are all trying to extract the disposable income out of people's pockets.

The insults are for anyone who has been here for any length of time and refuses to acknowledge what a PR department does.  This is their JOB.  He's not a "troll", this is an internet idea.  His job is to spin things positively.  If they were supposed to tell the exact objective truth and said this they would be in trouble.  Since no company does this, after a while people should get the hint.

As for my OPINION, I stated it was simply that. My opinion.  I don't believe 3d is that big of a deal, a bit of interesting novelty.  The touchpad and touch screen add a lot of depth to Sony's product that wasn't there with the PSP.  I think mutiple control schemes and changes of that magnitude are more interesting.

I'm not defending a corporate troll, that is just childish forum talk.  I'm telling people to get a grip, how many times can you complain about the same thing, especially when it is so inane and obvious what's going on?

Obviously *troll is an internet term, doesn't stop him from being one. If a poster said such things, they'd probably be moderated for it. The fact that you defend him makes you no better than he is.

You say it's his job to spin things positively, but all I see is negative trash talk about the competition's product. Petty.

As for your opinion, it's yours to have, I don't really care either way

Lastly, you're using how many times this sort of thing happens as defence that it's somehow ok and that no-one should complain? I don't know about you, but I think this sort of shameless bad-mouthing is wrong and is certainly nothing to be proud of

Fine.  Keep feeling upset about it.  I'm sure this will prevent it from happening in our cutthroat capitalist system, where it's completely legal and can sway peoples opinions.  People must have nothing better to do than analyze PR speak.  It boggles the mind.  There is no honor here, this is survival of the fittest.  Nintendo has made jackass comments in the past too, it just happens.

It is, in fact, trash talk. Not the worst I've seen but it's trash nonetheless

Just because it's common practice (according to you) does not mean that it isn't wrong

no not according to me next time you watch tv pay close attention to the ads and see if most ads at least to a certain extent don't have comparisons between the product being advertised and its competitors, where the competitors are downplayed and the product is hyped

I'm not upset about this... That's the thing, I never said I wanted to prevent it from happening, just an admission that it is, in fact, shameless and petty of them

Thank you

? no nothings bugging me um i was replying to a comment you posted to me remember?

"does not mean that it isn't wrong" well depends on who you are i guess honestly if nintendo was to come out and say that the ngp is a joke as a "handheld" because its too big i wouldn't find anything wrong with that because for me i expect that from companies vying for our attention and i have the same feeling about this current comment
