A $250 portable isn't the issue; what you get for that $250 is.

A $250 3DS that costs $100 to manufacture with a small catalog of games, the only standout among which is a port of SSFIV (a very good port, but still a port) with several key features as of yet to be added (video service, DS, 3DS store, web browser, etc.) and you're left with an overpriced device with somewhat limited appeal relative to its value.

On the other hand, a $250 NGP with a few must buy titles upon debut along with web functionality, online store/service and better hardware results in a device with greater functionality and better value for the price.

Of course the NGP is unlikely to be priced the same, but under that scenario, it's not hard to see gap in value.

If both devices continue to receive a lukewarm reception as sales of Android and iOS devices continue to grow, this may just be signaling the direction in which mass market portable gaming is heading. That's not to say that there won't still be a niche for the 3DS and NGP or any other dedicated handheld gaming device, it just won't be as large as the market for Android and iOS devices.
